Vitara questions
« on: February 08, 2005, 09:23:54 »
I've been offered a 1989 Vitara automatic (1.6L?) quite cheap. Haven't seen the car yet- are these suitable for light offroading? Do they have a low ratio transfer box? Are they ammeniable to mods (e.g. suspension/body lifts etc.)? Do they have solid front axle? Or would would I be better looking for a different small 4x4?

TIA

Vitara's are quite good off road.

The lack of breakover angle will always be a problem, but they are light and nimble, so easily recovered when you do get stuck, comfy being coil sprung and a well driven Vitara will suprise a lot of people.

Avoid any lift kit that replaces the front suspension arms and the alloy front diff will be no problem. MIne has had serious abuse and never failed :D

If you can stay out of ruts you will be suprised how far off road they will go

And when you get into it you can add a 12" lift like mine!

Cheers

Steve

I suppose 'lift' is a bit of an understatement its more of a complete suspension redesign.

It now has toyota hilux axles, sammy t/case, range rover springs and defender bushes. oh and 35" simexes fitted without cutting the body!

I dont know if it works yet as its not finished, but it will be done for the whaddon weekend.

Just to give you an idea of the silly height, the sills are now 28" of the floor.

Should have some photo's up soon.

Cheers

Steve

Not quite 'stock' then!! Look forward to seeing the before-n-after pics. My Surf projects are ongoing- 3" body lift and 33" tyres planned for Spring making it 7" over stock.
