expensive wheel bearing

left on fri night  to go to bulgaria and arrived (thurs) the drive took three days plus two nights in a hotel in germany
all because the nearside rear wheelbearing decided to explode on the autobarn
managed to knacker the bearing,hub,stubaxle,driveshaft nuts and washers
cost 1000 euro to fix at a main dealer so we spent two night sat and sun waiting for them to open and fix the disco so we could continue our journey also the front axle now needs rebuilding as there is lots or play in the swivels so going to be busy soon also need to fit a poly bush kit as the front panhard bushes have gone
and i did service it and check for free play b4 we left so european roads are crap and costly

Well I had an advisery on my mot for the Disco front wheel bearing   :shock:

so if thats the result for one failing I think I'll get the spanners out ;)
so many hills , so little time ....

i stripped the hub on the garage ramp on sat to see what was wrong and the rear halfshaft would not come out even with a slide hammer so i had to leave it for them to repair on monday
the stub axle was bent as the wheel was running on the half shaft inside the stub axle
the best was the bearing didn't even make any warning noises it just expired quietly and only showed up when the wheel siezed on the motorway and we were doing 65mph and towing a small trailer and a roofrack full of stuff and the two ton jack i had wouldn't lift the rear of the disco
just as well we bought breakdown insurance and they paid the cost of recovery and the hotel bill(except food and drink)
so the 1000euro (£780ish) was just parts and labour :'(

Couldn't help some sympathy here - I've used my CSW on the Euro m/ways for years, and am now on the 7th wheel bearing - including one that welded itself to the stub axle.  I keep a careful ear/feel out for the slightest rumble now (last week's was a distinct rumble felt through the steering wheel from the front o/s, and had both replaced while they were at it.)

I'm sure its the distinct 'rumble-strip' effect our continental cousins use on the concrete surfaces - a lot of the original M25 was this surface but was rapidly replaced because of water retention and horrendous noise pollution from tyre noise.  Has to be very hard work for suspension/bearings I reckon?

Last week's service included (first) new clutch at 133000m - and actually the friction plate had masses of wear left - just the drive spiggot (whatever that is) and some bronze looking bush completely knackered - no wonder I'd had some dreadful snatching/clunking for a while.....!)  Sorry - rambling now on your thread..........

i didnt realise the Europian roads were so bad, were abouts are you talking about? i might take a spare wheel bearing kit aswell as stub axle on the landy rally if there this bad  :lol:

Bad luck blackbob! at least u didnt have a more serious result of the wheel seizing on tha motaway!
When mine blew on the lightweight it threw the car a meter to the left half off the road, just pulled back in before i smacked into a lamppost! the little  :evil:
