Turbo Oil Seal Gone?
« on: April 05, 2008, 11:54:13 »
Morning...

Ive noticed that over the past few months my 300tdi has started to smoke more than it used to. Black smoke normally when its under load.

Ive taken all the pipes off from the intercooler/airfilter/turbo and there is some oil in them all..

Now, ive never taken them off in the year ive had it so i dont know how long its been there.

Is this normal? It not dripping wet, but if you put your hand inside your hands get black...

Ive got some pics, but at the mo im outside. Ill upload them when i get back in.

Im going to take the intercooler off in a bit and see how bad it is in there..

My plan is to take the pipes inside and clean them up, leave it a week and see how bad it is again.

could well be, but i'd be inclined to whip off the egr blanking plate first, stick my fingers down it and see if theres any oil there as it could just be a head gasket prob. failing that then either your correct and the seals need replacing or the engines breathing (very unlikly on a 300)

Its dry inside the manifold, felt though the egr hole :)

So it looks like the turbo is on its way out then?

Upon further investigation, it seems that oil has gone from the the oil cooler part breather pipe, down into the big pipe from the back of the air filter and though the turbo and intercooler that way.

Any ideas?

Yeap, part of the engine breather system runs from a useless oil trap on the driver's side of the head round the back of the block and into the air inlet ahead of the turbo, so piston blow-by forces oil drops and air into the clean air stream hitting the turbo.  Result, black smeggy oil everywhere.  I ran mine into a catch tank instead.  Worst case is when this oil mixes with the soot from EGR, the resulting black slime is highly carcinogenic and hard to shift.
