Freelander Starting Probs

I have a 2001 TD4 Freelander SW, I travel about 10 miles per day going to and from work (5 each way), then at weekends about 100miles....

The motor was laid up for about 7 days as i had a van from work. Went to start it yesterday and nothing, not even the central locking would work on the key fob. No ignition light, not even a click. Hooked it up to the van for 5 mins with the jump leads, and eventually got the usual dash lights and clicking associated with a flat battery, and evnetually it started...not a problem i thought, will go the long way home, a good 30min run!

Came to get in it again this morning, and nothing, no lights, wouldnt even unlock on the key fob again.......Jump started it again and got to work. Ive checked the battery water and theres plenty, covering the plates....I havnt seen any warning lights on the dash indicating there is a fault, or the batteries not charging, and the battery is only 18months old.....I dunno what to do next

Is it a flat battery? or faulty alternator? or does it just need a good charge?

Deffo sounds like battery to me, I have had same symptons twice and its been that.  Especially as you left it for a bit and its been fairly cold recently. Try a long charge to revive it first, but I think a new battery may be in order.

Could be the alternator, but does sound more battery like to me.

Got the motor home this morning from work, and now got the charger on it. The inidcator lights were well down, and in the past 3 hours it hasnt moved.....looks like im going out to fetch a new battery this afternoon

Well ive had the battery on charge today whilst it was still in the motor and the inidcator remained on the 2nd to lowest out of 6 (Red to green you know the kind of thing)

Went down tonight and disconnected the battery from the car and all of a sudden its shot up into the green indicating its charged

Could it be I have a short on the car? and if so whats the most likely thing to be causing it?

Could be totally wrong here but..............

have a look in cigarette lighter/power sockets

We had a similar problem and it turned out to be a coin in the socket causing a short  :roll:
