Overlanding vehicle insurance
« on: April 21, 2008, 17:06:20 »
One for the seasoned overlanders this...

Can't seem to find ANYONE in the UK interested in insuring me for over 60 days travel in europe.

I intend to temporarily export my Landy this year in Bosnia (full import hideously expensive and equally complex!) and will therefore be buying an insurance policy from a broker there for the duration of my stay (over 6 months before I driver her back).

My question is therefore - if the UK based policy I departed with only allows 60 days away, how do I drive back home legally insured if I have been abroad for all that time? I ask this as I understand that the temporary insurance policy I will buy in Bosnia will not come with its own green card.

Anyone got any thoughts or experiences? Even the insurance companies I'm calling (including "specialists" fromt he Landy mags) can't seem to answer this! Surely its not that complex???

Your help is much appreciated.

Hiya,

They didn't offer you cover for Croatia?????......they certainly covered us last year - but I know that Bosnia was excluded (as was Macedonia, Albania, Serbia).......I did hear someone mention the NFU as a possibility - the alternative is to try and get some insurance in the country when you're there (although this is can be fraught with problems)

my mistake, called back to clarify on croatia and it is covered by them - but the policy cost is another matter.

Tried NFU today who wont insure over 30 days overseas.

Also tried "Land Rover Insurance" straight from the manufacturer website who dont cover my 110 Station Wagon LAND ROVER as it has too many (9) seats!!?? . This despite the fact that they claim on their website that "we understand every land rover customer is unique"....mmmm..... The guy on the phone even asked me what a station wagon was and then went on to confirm with me that I was talking about a Land Rover! Odd at the very least.

Just about to start pulling may hair out over this!

Try AXA,

My AXA company Insurance covers me for Bosnia, but not certain about how many days though as I told them the time for my to travel to Bulgaria (18 days) and thats what I got.
