300 Tdi auto with a stutter

Driving round today my 300 Tdi has developed an strange fault all of a sudden the revs drop off for a second and Check Engine flashes up on the dashboard.Never experienced anything like it with a Disco my old 200 seemed bomb proof compared to this thing.I,m starting to regret buying it.Any one any ideas ?.

If you cant fix it with Duct tape you havent used enough duct tape.

Check engine light :-. that sounds a bit new-fangled.  You must have an ECU somewhere in the gubbins and my only thought would be to start with that.  Some sort of diagnostic might be in order.
