Will it recover?

Last year we were given some land by our neighbour... Very nice of him.. :lol:

Well SWMBO had the bit ear marked for a kids play area, so I started clearing the area, got it down to soil, but there were a few irises, which were a pain, but I thought I had them shifted.

I built a frame for the wood chip to go in and put the weed net down, it looked great. the frame butted up to a lovely silver birch all looked fine.

Well as the summer went on, I noticed the bloody irises starting to come through, no matter what I did they kept coming through, so I dug out some heavy duty root killer, pulled back the 5 inches of wood chip and weed net and then went to town.

Job done, they died, however in my haste I think I may have damaged the birch tree! :shock:

This year it looking a bit sparse of leaves, there is some but its not as full as the rest! probably only 50% :shock:

I think my haste to kill the irises I may have killed the tree!

Does anyone know if it will recover??

 dont know for sure  :-k      BUT      when we have had a similar situation on most plant/tree type of things we cut it right back quite harshly, and then the growth goes into the existing tree/plant before it re shoots    ( hopefully  :lol: )

there is a products that only farmers can get hold of... ask a farmer nicely, and im sure he has some INDUSTRIALLY strong week killer kicking about  :P

Let the tree recover, then next spring drill a small hole in the trunk, tap the sap off and make birch sap wine. Yum Hic Burp. Don't forget to plug the hole afterwards with a bit of dowel though, or it'll 'bleed' to death.

Have got the recipe if you want it. Goes nicely as a starter for grey squirrel casserole
