Have I got 10 or 24splines?
« on: May 09, 2008, 17:58:01 »
Hi Guys

I was after some confirmation of a theory. I've blew yet another diff (front one) this time in my truck. Last time I did the back one, and replaced the old 10spline, with a newer 24spline. All hunky dory, this time it comes to the turn of the front.

Now the situation i'm in, I can't get a garage access for longer than a day, so I need to make sure I have all the parts I need to finish the job, before I start.

I've got a 2nd hand 24spline diff, and the short half shaft complete with CV (right side) sat here. I was going to wait until I could get hold of a long side half shaft and CV joint before I started, thinking that I would be looking at a broken 10spline diff.

HOWEVER! As I was just stood by the car, I decided to whip the centre cap out the alloy, and low and behold is a rubber hub cap behind. (indicating perhaps it's a newer, 24spline model, as the old 10spline have the cast end piece I'm sure) Took off the rubber cap, lo and behold it's got 24splines poking out at the wheel end.

Now my question is, is it likely that the whole thing is 24plines all the way along to the diff?? i can't really afford the time to strip it all down, realise it's a 10spline, and then have to put it back together drive it home and wait for the rest of the bits to arrive, or do I take a gamble and strip it all out, hoping:
1) The parts in there are all 24spline
2) The only broken parts are the ones which I have spares i.e. the diff itself or the SHORT half shaft.

Alternatively I have to wait a couple of weeks and spend some dosh for the long halfshaft to arrive and for me to have the time off work again. Obviously, because of my situation (I can get access to a workshop providing i'm in and out within the same day) I'd always thought it was best to wait until i've got the whole set (diff and 2 sides of shaft) before starting the job.

What are your thoughts guys?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

unfortunately i dont think you can tell from that end, thats just the spilnes on the end of the cv. ive had both styles on my 93 disco, and both 10 spline.

you need to look at the end of the shaft at the diff.

Hmm interesting point, thanks.

I was almost certain that the 10splines have a cast end which bolts onto the hub and you can't see the shaft until you take that off; wheras the 24splines have the bare shaft coming through, and a "driving member" which slides onto the shaft and then bolts onto the hub. (held on by a circlip... which I can see)

Any other offers on that?

yeah the ones ive got on now are the solid ones, with seperate cv.

thats what i had on before, and my diff it definitely 10 spline. maybe its not original?

or maybe you can use the same one piece cv and seperate drive flange with either 10 or 24 spline shafts?

Yeah your photo shows what I believe to be the older 10spline setup.

What I believe to be the newer, 24spline has instead of what you've got shown there, a flange with a big splined hole in the middle, that slides onto the CV joint and bolts to the hub.

That said, you might be onto something about the CV joints being all 24splined. That was my worry, to strip it all out and find that the Wheel end of the CV joint is 24pline, but back into the diff is a 10spline. In which case I'd have to put it all back together, drive home and wait another week.

Unfortunately the photos on the parts websites don't really let on much... the CV joint for the 10spline is RTC6811, and the CV for the 24 is TDJ000010. The photos on their websites aren't that detailed (probably the same part they only took one photo) but they both apparently show that the wheel end which connects to the hub as having 24 splines....

Thanks for your comments Stew.

sorry mate if my pics not clear, that pic is what you believe to be the 24 spline setup. the shaft it just still in it. it has "24" splines, but thats just the cv.

just took this pic, both have been on mine, just with different cv's. 10 spline.

Ah ok, fair enough stew. So just to clarify, the one on the RIGHT of your picture still connected to a 10spline diff?

Cheers,
Steve

As far as I know all 200 tdi Discos are 10 spline diffs regardless of drive member, and all CV's are 32 spline.
All 300 tdi's, apart from the real early ones are 24 spline at the diff, but are still 32 at the CV.

Not true, BB is a very late 93 200 tdi and has 24-spline diffs. As far as I'm aware, all 300tdi's had 24-spline diffs (94 onwards).
