So, it would seem my air flow meter is shot.
Wheres the best (cheapest) place to find one?
Its a 1990 3.5 injection. WITHOUT a catalytic converter
And as Im skint money's a real issue !
Just a thought. > the ECU is a 1990 of that im certain. The engine I assume as its a 3.5 injection is most probably correct also. BUT> The air flow meter has number 73242A (Lucas) on it. The date stamp is 4990. Anyone know if this is the correct air flow meter in the first place ?

OK is it hot-wire or flapper, look through the middle and tell me what you see!
Ring round the breakers, you should get some sort of guarantee. Hot wire ones are like Rocking Horse droppings though, I've just paid £200 for a system, the early flapper ones cost half that, except the airflow meters which often get bought by reconditioners!

and therin lies the question.
Its a hot wire one. BUT , im not convined that this is the correct unit for the car !
See, im under the impression that HOT WIRE meters are for cars fitted with a cat. And mine is not fitted with a cat ???????
Therfore, should I have the flapper ?

No, don't worry about that, it's not a problem. Haynes seem to think that the 1988 RRC had a hot-wire, but they were still 3.5 flappers, the very last 3.5s were hot-wire.
It would appear that the hot-wire was introduced to enable cats to be fitted
where required
in 1987/88 but we still got the flapper.
in 1989/90 the flapper was ditched and everybody got hot wire, but we didn't need the cat until 1992.
The tune select resistor tells the ECU whether it's a cat car or not, it's located in front of the ECU and probably taped to the loom near the plug.
The wiring loom also tells the ECU if it's manual/automatic.
I don't yet know if all the hot-wire MAF sensors are the same, according to the checklist in the Haynes the early/late hot wire systems have a different reading on the voltmeter test, but this might be down to the ECU, not the meter. I don't think Rimmers list 2 different parts but that's not the gospel either.
Thing is hot-wire has a LOS mode, limp home if you like and it should still run without the MAF, albeit a little rich.
Why do you think it's bust?
Anyway, you're answer is the breakers. You want a 1990 onwards model, which is good, and a RRC or Disco should be fine. If poss you want to hear it running or know it came from a runner.

BTW I just paid £200+ for a hot-wire system, a lot get sold complete and go abroad so I was lucky to get it. £150 of that was the ECU, so the rest makes up the balance, biggest part of which is the MAF (and I think he let me have that cheap) but I wouldn't pay 3 figures for one anywhere.

My reason for suspecting Meter:
Its simple but here goes > (im not a techie)
The adjuster when turned does not affect the mixture in any way.
On a CO2 meter the mixture could not be adjusted. Just for laughs yesterday we turned the screw in something like 15 turns and then put it back on - No Difference !
Shes fouling up the plugs within 4 miles < and that distance is getting less each time !
(im sick of buying plugs too!)
Any Ideas, would you agree or disagree ?

Sounds like it's already running LOS then, way too rich. You need to try a substitute meter, do any of yuor mates have a 3.9 EFi, Rangie or Disco, so you could try a substitute to confirm your suspicions?

Limited Operating Stategy, it's a posh term for the limp home mode.
Have you done the multimeter diagnostic that's in the Haynes?
I ask because there's a good breakers near me, very near in fact, but failing that i have a spare meter you could borrow, but it's a bit far.

I can vouch for the fact that the air flow meter works - unfortunately it didn't cure my problem, so he's still got it.

I had the same problem on my P38, the bad news was that there were no units available worldwide, the only one I could find was in Central America :(
I used (at Brookwells' suggestion) a place in Abingdon or thereabouts who broke Land Rovers. (Normally I managed it myself :) ) They provided a second hand one at a reasonable rate which helped me out of a grave reliability situation.
The only thing is, I can't remember what the place was called! Maybe somebody else will know, or if not, I can try to dig out the receipt.
