Been out to play but
« on: February 13, 2005, 17:33:00 »
quick question, am i alone in worrying while i play with my disco offroad that i,m going to trash it and not be able to take it home? i think this may be hindering the more adventurous attempts at some obstacles.
went playing at grand canyon in sussex today where rangies seem to be the weapon of choice but there was a guy there in a 53 reg disco   who was giving it large at everything, fair play to him but i wouldn't if it was mine, only had road tyres as well but was getting about most places
Hopefully these doubts will wear off the more i do

u dont have to do the mad stuff, u can always say to the wife that sum 1 muged u and nicked the car and they did the damage, no actually u cant do that, but u can always do the stuff thats less damaging to the landy, thats the good thing about off roading their is a choice, only do what u think is ok, or watch other people do it and c what happens to their car first. 8)

I've been thinking the same . :(

The more I do to it the more I worry about it . It's getting so bad that I think I'll have to get me a trailer and buy a cheap series shed or a rusty sj  to trash and save the disco for laning and camping trips. :D (no honest luv I realy do need another 4x4)

just went today as a spur of the moment thing to try out the technic amazons i bought for it, must say they are quite impressive in the wet stuff, there was a guy there in a nice shiny N reg 300tdi as well who was going at everything, when we left he had no front valance and the rear bumper end caps falling off, i have a go at some of the harder bits but what i,m saying is i have this niggling thought in the back of my head that says if you break it your walking home :D  cant go to mad anyway as the wife was with me and she screams like a banshee when shes scared   not that i try too hard

thats why the series are the best, if u bend em , u get the hammer out, if u break it , u get the hammer out. and if u really break it , parts are so cheap, it will cost u a couple of quid, long live the series landys, i wouldnt swap mine 4 the world.

No your not alone

I worry too, especially I can't really fix her myself, she's our only form of transport. Tend to be a bit girly as a result.
Went a couple of weeks ago to Tixover, had a great time Alex actually got muddy for the first time and loved it (eight year old)
For the next couple of weeks I find I get twitchy at every new noise she makes... they have now subsided.

Was great fun, and I think it's something if you keep doing you braver and braver. There cetainly seems to be a mind set that doesn't think they have had a good time unless they have broken something.... wish I had the expertise to be adventurous like that

Hi Beast5680, where is the site you went to today then.

hi colin went to grand canyon down in west sussex first time i,ve been there its quite good, it was a spur of the moment thing as it was blowing a blizzard here at 9 then cleared up so i thought i would go and check it out and get the disco some mud on, managed to stall in on a climb(not paying attention) and drown in water so i had to get the wd40 out   good fun though

you will find that alot of the newer stuff is a company car or lease car and the driver hasn't paid out of his own pocket. a friend of mine went on a lro weekend and got talking to a middle aged chap doing the rough stuff in his new shape rangie, without a care in the world. After speaking to him for a while he found that the chap was keeping that rangie for the rough stuff and his brand new rangie sport for everyday use  .

now thats a different league. and yes i worry about destroying my old c plate rangie  .

I suffer from the 'don't want to bend it' worries too! It's usually at its worst just after carrying out repairs

I find it eases off with the more times we go playing without breaking anything though :D

It's really down to knowing your vehicle and its limitations, how far you want to push it etc.

There's always the AA or RAC! BTDT!!

i thought it was good there quite a big site and enough to keep you occupied whatever your level of offroading , dont know if any other mud clubbers go though kept looking for the stickers today but didnt see any, slindons more of a rural setting part quarry part woods
i like both these sites as there are lots of marshalls on hand to keep an eye on things and pull you out of you get stuck, one or two other places i,ve been had no marshalls and attracted a lot of idiots

Do you want to put an Events entry up, or a post in Pay-n-Play? I would, but I don't know the place so can't describe it :?

Off road & how far
« Reply #19 on: February 13, 2005, 21:56:54 »
Useful maxim/rule of thumb. Only drive what you are happy with.

Go to a site that has good marshalling and is well run. Some sites have graded routes allowing you to start on the easy stuff & build your confidence.
Watch what others do/ are doing. You'll get a feel for where to go & where to avoid.
If in doubt ask for guidance or a spotter if neccesary.

Don't bow to peer pressure or rise to the challenge when someone else gets stuck of having a go yourself.

Invest in half a day off road tuition to get a feel for what it's like when it slips/slides around and how to cope when it gets a pit poo shaped.

Try and remember to have fun
Come kneel with me in the Chapel of Solihull and worship at the altar of the Green Oval
