Mot Fail Help plz
« on: June 02, 2008, 17:47:46 »
Yet again for the second year running the freelander has failed its mot test with super high emissions    it took me 4 attempts last year to get the thing a mot and that involved a new cat and oxygen sensor...

now i do know that it eint gona get a new cat again this year

the most annoying thing is the smug little jumped up pregnant female fish the other side of the counting grining at me as he says its all fine apart from that grrrrrrrrrrr

several peed off now

but does anyone know how i can cure this??

1. emissions are way over the top how can i lower em ?

2. the throttle is now sticking soon as u hit 3000 revs and wont come off till u blip the throttle ( again did this last year )

idiot says summat to do with engine management system????

i now have 3 poxy landrovers all with no mot makes me really really wonder why i dont chop the lot in and buy a Eurobox

O2 sensors shouldn't (don't) fail that frequently.

I think the clue is in the fact that the throttle appears to be sticking. I'm not too familiar with the later Freelander, but I would check that the throttle cable is free and not got a 'kink' in it anywhere. Also check inside the throttle body, it maybe chocked up and needs a clean out...with good old fashioned carb cleaner.

If it is really running *that* rich then I'd also check the air filter and the spark plugs. Has it had a service at all? If so then there is something a miss with the air flow/induction side of things......thats my guess :D

If its a rover K series then there are a few known issues re throttle

Throttle is Plastic and prone to sticking, especially when hot.  Clean it or, You could stick a new oem spec plastic one on if yours has deformed over time (you wont be able to tell by looking).  Alternativley if you are keen/rich enough stick on a larger 52mm Allow one whihc are not prone to sticking.

Also this includes the TPS (Throttle position sensor) obvious role, it could be iffy but you need diags to know for sure. If you get a new Throtle body then the TPS is included.

The other thingy is the IAC (Idle air control valve)
This can get sticky and dirty.
You can remove it and give it a clean and possibly that will help.  The problem is it sticks but id guess that would make it run lean not rich. Alternativley you could get a new one.  When you turn the ignition (but not crank) you should hear the IAC reset, if not then its iffy.

The Elise parts site puts descriptions of these issues wiht its products hence my link, they are also speedy re delivery however they are only rover parts.

I should have added that if you take out and clean the Throttle body like andyB says then a bit of WD40 around the "flappy bit" it may be enough to keep it working through an MOT However id replace it as its pain and may cause other problems)

Right went to a another garage today in northampton which was a pain but turns out worth it

 the cat we had put on 12 months ago was indeed a faulty unit  so now with the freebie and a new cat emissions has dropped from 0721 to 0.020 which is indeed a much better result and this cat has a 2 year warrenty as the other had only a year

right then so thats one outta 3 of the fleet working now onto the other 2  :|

May be worth running through the other issues as a cat should last a lot longer than a year! Especially as the throttle is sticky. Could be clogging the cat up.?

Good to hear its back on the road.
