tapping noise
« on: June 13, 2008, 08:08:04 »
hi everyone, after much nagging from the mrs i have parted from my v8 but i have managed to buy a tidy diesel 3oo tdi and i must say im impressed by it!yeah ok it needs work but the big jobs have been done, like inner wings, boot floor, rear door shuts, and those oil leaks.so i set about doing the clean up on the engine and making it clean and shiney flusing the intercooler and just removing 120,000 of crud build up.but i have a question for you fellas that know more about the 300tdi engine than me.it seems to have a loud ticking noise that increases when you rev her and seems to be coming from the left side of the engine when you look from the front,is this normal and do they all sound like that?

I had exactly the same, thought it was the tappets so adjusted them but was still there, to confirm this whilst engine is running take off the oil filler cap, it should get noisier if its the tappets, if not as in my case it will be the vacuum pump, mine got very loud in the end but replaced it and now it has no tapping at all.  30 Min job but about £100. to fix, if the pump goes the brakes dont work so well.

Hope this helps

It is sealed unit, i know somewhere there is a link to fix if it leaks, to be honest i think new is best, the breaks had to be stood on to work with mine when it went, on the motorway.  It is easy to do too.

Glad to help, i was also very pleased with results, mine also runs Ex....... Not saying anymore taking her to south of france in 2 weeks, Everything crossed big adventure for me in Landrover, normally go from Gosport to Billing as longest run....

Diff, all i can say is jack up back with on wheel on ground and turn other, if it turns it is ok, then try other side, then try diff lock if it does not move then assume ok, repeat other side. Finally jack up whole rear and turn one wheel, "I think" other should turn in opposite direction.

Cant guarentee it is right tho, but that is what i do.
