The sad thing is that people in this country are too sheeplike to make a stand. If every person who had one of these were to prise it out of the bin and apply a large hammer to it, they'd have to reconsider. You couldn't charge an entire town with criminal damage!

As it is, anyone who tries to lead a protest in this country will turn around to find that their support has melted away and they're now being made an example of. The French wouldn't stand for it...

The French would probably have no choice tut to stand for it, as all the chair makers would be on strike for every second thursday off or something :)

Yes, we are with South Norfolk Council who have chosen to scrap the idea.

I understand one of the issues was that if a bin wasn't left out, it screwed up the system. They had to scan every bin on the round. So if you go on holiday or choose not to put it out because there isn't much in it, it throws a wobbly!

More government faith in technology that has been proven not to work, blindly banging on about ID cards that they "cant forge" (yeh right.) and yet most of them dont even know how to encrypt a usb drive or laptop so if the lose it then they dont disclose data.

We had wheely bins issued by the council and they did'nt tell anyone chips were fitted.

Then kids and myself on a couple of occessions found this little inch circle things on the roads and pavements so we used to smash them.

In the heat and movement they drop out, then someone from the press mentioned what they were, council says were put in to save money in the future incase they bring in charges.

dead easy to get out use a pry bar

So whats going to stop people swoping them ?

Huh  Wheely bins, your lucky!! we have to carry the rubbish in our hands to the bin truck, a walk of 36 miles!

Sorry couldn't resist

Our council won't go to wheely bins because they would have to invest in new bin trucks! we have a black bag kerbside collection, and about two years ago they started an "orange" bag scheme where you can place your recycleables! But they only started it in south Pembrokeshire and kept promising that North would have it soon  They are starting in in "some" areas of North next month, then if that works they will roll it out to the rest of us!! Mental!

Powys CC have got refuse collection spot on. You get as many recycling bags as you want, and just put them out on the kerb to be collected as per usual (a second bin lorry follows the one collecting the black bags). No wheelie bins, no chips. People recycle just as much if not more when you make it that easy as when you bully them into it.

I've noticed over the last week, after cycling into work, along the old A3 in Hampshire, that there are more and more CCTV cameras going up.
I find it quite worrying, as this road is not known for its large amount of anti social behaviour, high crime or the the other reasons that are usually given.
It is a predominantly residential road.
OK, so I'm in a job that uses CCTV to aid in detection of crime, but I find it very intrusive.
A move back to the country is on the cards.
I don't want to live in a Police State, which this country is now becoming.

I do think you've hit the nail on the head there. If it were made really easy, more people would recycle stuff. The other problem is the variation in what each council can take. The only plastic ours will take is bottles. No yoghurt pots or margarine tubs or the like, just bottles.
