MT or AT?

Guys,

I've decided to compromise on my off-roading stuff - I'm not going to do anything hardcore just some UK greenlanes. I'd like to be able to lane all four seasons and I'm thinking about an expedition down to Africa at some point (pipe dream?).

So, I've decided against lifting my Disco 1 and I'm just going to go with the biggest tyres available (245/70R16's or 245/75R16's???). Have n't got the extra cash for the lift and anyway, this way I'll have to improve my off-road driving technique!!!

However, being Mr Indecisive I can't work out wether to take my expensive BFG's in MT or AT.

How bad will the AT's be in the winter mud??

How bad will the MT's be on the road in terms of noise, handling, and fuel consumption??

Has anybody gone from one to the other on the same vehicle without making any other changes??

Well I've had BF Goodrich AT's fitted for the past year now and I rate them very highly indeed. I offroad throughout the year and so far they've got me through everything I've thrown at them - including some axle deep mud. They perform excellently on road too in both the dry and the wet. I've done approx 20k miles since fitting them and they are showing no signs of wear yet.

For me they are the perfect tyre and I'd recommend them to anyone..!!!

I realised cycling home that a little info about my driving habits might have helped. I cycle to work most days (10 m each way) and try to avoid using the car at all if I'm not travelling with the family or having fun in it so I only do about 4000 miles each year.

I want to buy the AT's but I wonder if I'll regret it when i get stck in the winter mud.

if your only doing that many miles, you'd be better getting the m/ts. tyre wear and fuel will be less noticeable at that low mileage. that way you can go just about anywhere when you want. :)

I have BFG LAND Terrains fitted to mine - they are a US only tyre usually but 4X4AT up in Yorkshire got their hands on a couple of ISO containers worth so I got a set - not as aggressive as MT or AT but from what I've seen mine get up to they are very very capable tyres with all of the usual BFG benefits of grip, low wear, low noise etc etc, but and a big but this one - only 56 quid a corner - fitted!   Mine have done nigh on 8K miles and have only just lost the casting 'bobble's on the outer tread.......

Might be worth a look if the MT/AT are a bit too extreme for you as my driving is mostly commuting with some laning/woodland work chucked in so sounds similar to yours........

ordered my BFG's now as 240/75R16's in AT pattern. Getting them Saturday.
