straight through exhaust for defender 90 300tdi
« on: June 25, 2008, 23:14:12 »
looking at replacing the normal exhaust with a straight through exhaust.
is it easy to do this at home, and what sought of price will i be looking at.
been considering making it into a side exit exhaust as well, will this be an easy job as well, and will it affect insurance etc.

cheers

Thats my side exit i made, but i did put a small box in it, not sure what its off but its tiny, is far too loud i think without one. Did drive it for 2 week with no boxes and it got on my tits. That was pretty easy to make, the 2 90 degree bends to dring it over the chassis legs were the hardest to do to get it right, o and the mounting bracket, but once it was lined up it were fine, if your good at measuring, cutting and welding you'll be fine to do it on the drive, just tack it all section at a time first when making it so its easy to move bits etc. Its a ball ache keep fitting it and tking off then trying it again, but if you want it right its worth it.

i was looking for one behind the rear left wheel arch.
i saw on another persons topic that they had used what appears to be a flexi metal pipe. is this a feasable means of doing it, as it looks alot easier to do.

cheers

Mine was at the rear when I purchased the TC, but if I had to do it again I would put it in the middle as it's less to go wrong and does not interfere with the articulation on the back.

Hi Suggs, Your exhaust looks great. What firm did it for you, as I'd like something similar on the Hi Cap when it's sorted.

Pipe Craft in Basildon Essex, they do a lot of custom exhaust work on the American car scene, but will bend pipe to any design while you wait. this is the 3rd one they have made for me and always been very happy with them...

the flexi pipe is useless, just wait till its a few months old and goes hard, then splits as per usual
the stainless stuff is perfect
the mild steel, its rubbish
you can buy pre-formed bends off the shelf, 90 and 45 degree are always stocked by exhaust suppliers like C.E.S ect ect
but they can get any bend made fore you for next day
i made all of the exhausts for my yella 90, and its easy
got a straight through on mine behind the pass door.......it allows peope to know where im stuck up at the local woods
