Tail Gate Adjustment
« on: June 26, 2008, 22:36:38 »
Evening all.

Have the Rangy now and the rear upper tailgate is a bit iffy.  Its not totally shot and I think I can sort it.  However the left hand side does not shut properly - it doesnt quite engage with the catch.  Any tips for adjusting this??

It is possible to move the 'pin' in and out a bit, but having spent an hour doing the same on my friends RRC last night we discovered it was the latch that was shot, so it's new latch time. It looked OK and clicked manually when pushed, however I noticed it was pos to unlatch it without pressing the button so in effect it never held the pin.

Had a similar problem with mine when I replaced the tailgate and used the old latches.  They were worn inside and while I could get them to operate when setting them up, vibrations from driving caused them to unlatch after about 10 minutes.  I eventually got fed up and bought new ones for £15 each from Island 4x4 which seemed to be the cheapest around

We have just done away with the latch.

Riveted two flaps onto the upper tailgate, which lap over the back of lower tailgate. Now both sections open together, obviously its not secure, but then my door locks don't work either.

There aluminium at the moment but will be replaced with steel.

The crook lock and bit of steel bar thats paddlocked through rear wheel take care of security!

Half a can of WD40 later and it now seems to lock ok with a bit of a push, but I will keep an eye on it and if it reoccurs then I will be off to Island 4x4 as recommended, thanks all!
