Buying a 95 V8 Auto Disco???
« on: July 04, 2008, 09:57:21 »
Looking at getting a wkend toy for light offroading/greenlaning and the odd camping trip. Seen a Auto V8 with history around 80k miles. Not visited it yet. What are the pitfalls with V8 and mpg that sort of thing or should i just go for a diesel??

The only real problem with the V8 is waterproofing it - they apparently do not like wading, and while there are fixes none of them are 100% reliable.

The auto box will make a serious dent in the mpg figures, but I don't think they're prone to any unusual problems. I'd be more inclined towards a manual V8 with an LPG coversion but if the one you've found is rust-free and has service history I'd be inclined to give it serious consideration.

my first discovery(the one in the avitar)was a v8,cracking motor a real joy to drive, would have pulled a house down, she did hate water though despite my atempts to sort that out.Just one word to the wise though mate they are not cheap to keep fueled up your going to get around 18mpg towing caravans, some truely frightening mpg figures around town and stop start driving and at best 23mpg on long runs.in the end she had to go.as said try and get a lpg converted one if you dead set on a petrol but i replaced her with a diesel it doesnt sound as nice granted but that roar of the v8 soon wears off.also its going to cost you more in service items, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, etc.hope this helps mate, the figures i have quoted are not set in stone some will get better mpg but some worse.hope you find what your looking for.

v8 bad mpg 6- 12 mines doing got 12 - 19 from older v8 engine. no waterproof issues. lpg v8 worth the extra money .

sounds great , diesels well 135 per little where am compared to 109 combined lpg for same mpg roughly  :-k
