adjustable panard rod

hi guys could anyone tell me how you fit and adjust an adjustable panard rod, i no how to fit a standard panard rod, but how do you no when its adjusted to where it should be, ive got a 1994 200tdi discovery, thanks

Hi Robert, not a job I've done myself but I reckon you'd get away with taking your old one off, adjusting the new one so its exactly the same length then wacking it on. You'd need tracking guages to set it properly.

surely if you set it to the same length the old one was it sort of defeats the point? :-. i would like to get one but some comps ban rosejoints!

Not had to fit one on a LR before, but come to think of it I have one on a Locost (it will be finished for summer, the question is which summer). I take it the one you have or are looking at getting is the type which has a standard bush on one end and a rod end screwed in at the other (very similar to what one I made for the locost).

Due to the arrangement of the bush and rod end mountings I had to fit the rod end first on the Locost, but on a LR it should be easy enough to fit either end first like a normal panhard rod.

On the locost the adjustment was simple. With it fitted, measure the axles location relative to the chassis and work out which way it needs to be adjusted if any. Unbolt one end of the panhard rod and screw it in/out to the desired length, fit it back together and then remesure the axles location. Keep adjusting as necissery untill the axle is mounted central to the chassis at normal ride height. When suitably adjusted, tighten the rod end lock nut.

Boss
An alternative to the rod end would be to take a panhard rod with bushes at both ends and cut it into 2 sections, removing a suitably wide section. Then weld a threaded insert in to one section and a threaded (bolt) into the other section. Just screw it back together (with an aditional nut to loc it tight once assembled and adjusted) and hey presto an adjustable panhard rod without using a rose joint.
If you go down this route I would advise that the cut out section should be as close to oneend of the panhard rod as theasable for maximum strength under bending loads.
