why you dont drive a polo into a defender
« on: July 11, 2008, 12:34:10 »
Spent last weekend with mates in newquay, and my god the weather was crap.
But back to the original topic.
Was out on a booze run in the evening, on the way to the offy, had stopped on my side of the road, indicating right, and was sat completely still for at least 2 mins waiting for the other side of the road to be clear, when i felt a mild nudge(and i mean mild, felt like i had slipped the clutch a bit quick). First I thought I had done something, and then realised i was in the middle of the road, foot planted on the brake and the clutch. And then came to the conclusion that i had just been rear ended, oh what joy, at which point most expletives under the sun came out. Looked in the rear view to see a chav in a silver polo stuck to my bumper. I drove slowly forward onto the curb. Turned off, and hand brake up. Saw the chav coming out of his car looking rather cheesed off, and looking for someone to blame. At which point 7 decent sized blokes got out of my defender and his face completely changed. I got out to asses the damage. We all sought of just stood there silent for about 2 mins and then he cherped up what i was looking for......

"Sorry mate was all my fault."

Thank god for that i thought. I asked for his details at which point he got them out and we exchanged details.
My mate then asked him what happened. According to him he was coming around the corner over the brow of the hill, saw my car and put his brakes on, at which point they locked and he slid into the back of me. he reckons he was doing less then 20. I admit it was wet, but he must have been doing 30 at least. Although i was hacked off, i wasnt too bothered as it was gonna be him paying and not me.

Now for the good bits........ the pics smile.gif

First is of his car smile.gif

Then the damage to mine smile.gif

so through this we come to the conclusion that driving into a defender is not a good idea smile.gif

cheers

Winner.

Did it damage the rear cross member?

It must have - i really think it has. You really need a new one.... Oh and the chassis, and i bet the bulkhead has twisted from the massive forces involved.

I'd say that would probably be a right off , or at least a re-chassis with a courtesy car until yours is done.

But no, being straight about it, you may well have some damage, at least get a chassis alignment done, or get his insurers to do one, better safe than sorry.

Oh and WOW, poor little polo, shame a *nob, or should that be kn*b,  :P was driving it, it looked like it a faily nice example of one.

To be honest thats not really your problem

As long as it says red on the V5, i would think they will match it.

When becky's car was fixed, i was worried about colour matching.

Most places now use a spectrophotometer to measuer the colour at various places near the area and make the paint from that.

It was a cock on match.

If the door does get replaced, see if you can wangle to old one.

Would ebay a treat.
