TD5 fuel consumption

Hi all,

Just popped over from the defender section to ask you chaps a question.

My son has a TD5 disco which appears to be only returning 16 MPG. I wondered what it should be doing and what might be at fault if it should be doing considerably more.

It has had a new pump and a new fuel pressure regulator fitted.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Maybe his right foot needs lightening?

Could be a number of things.
1) Fuel leak
2) Bunged up air pressure/temp sensor on the inlet manifold
3) MAF not functioning
4) any number of other electrickery bits that can go wrong

What has he checked?

When my MPG goes down then it is usually down to the tyre pressures being too low.


Also check that the brakes aren't binding

I'm not sure what he has checked but I will ask him when i see him.

No sign of a brake binding and as far as I know he regularly checks his tyre pressures.

It runs nicely enough, no smoke or anything untoward

all this electrikery fitted to these motors is a bit beyond me,(the work of Satan ) Ive just replaced the N/A diesel in my 90 with  a 200 TDI and now consider myself on the cutting edge of technology :oops:

Can anyone tell me what approximately what one can expect to get out of a TD5. Its an auto by the way.

I drive like I have the pope in the back and get around 35mpg  Which I am well impressed with, its 100% standard and got the EGR  fitted.

I've noticed in the past TD5 engines seem to fall into two distinct distributions, those with reasonable fuel economy and those with disastrous fuel economy.  (Mine falls somewhere between the two but I think it's the tyres and all the extra air resistance.)  My pet theory is that there is some little-known problem that plays havoc with the fuel economy, but I've not yet worked out what it is.  Sorry this isn't very helpful, but I'd be interested to know the solution, as it shouldn't be that bad!

For an unmodified auto I'd have thought 26-28 at worst.

On a long run - Manchester to Kent at a speed of 60-70mph I will get around 35mpg. The same run driven enthusiastically then the mpg falls to 25-30. lots of short runs gives an mpg in the mid to low 20's.

If one or more of the tyres is low then the mpg falls below 20mpg.

The reason I mentioned binding brakes was that the mpg on mine was crap and I thought the brakes were binding on the drivers side.(heavy braking and pulling to the side symptoms-down to tyre pressure or so I thought)  They weren't and I didn't investigate further. Turned out (at MOT time) that it was the passenger side that was binding and no I don't  know why it was pulling to the right either. My D2 is an auto so you don't get the other symptoms associated with binding brakes like a burnt out clutch
