Starter Motor

I need to pick some of your brains!

My range rover won't turn over. Was fine..... but now I turn the key and the solenoid keeps clicking as if I've got a flat battery. Got the jump leads out, same thing happened.

Took the starter motor off and put in on the bench, put 12V across it and it spins, not super fast, but it spins, solenoid clicks in and out ok. Put it back on the car and it does the same thing.

I thought the wires might be a bit dodgy so I got the battery and ran jump leads straight to the starter. Again click, click and no spin.

Bit confused as it worked on the bench, is it knackered and doesn't have enough power to turn the engine over?

Ps, I can turn the engine over with a spanner on the crackshaft nut at the front.

My starters just gone. Thought it was a flat battery as turned over slowly. Very slowly. Battery check proved that as being ok. New starter and now fine  :lol:

You don't say if you have jumped just the positive to the starter or both (inc. negative earth).  If you have jumped both from a known good battery then it is your starter on the way out.  If not, then it could be a poor earth from the engine to the battery via the earthing straps.

It may be the solenoid on the starter motor is sticking, I've had this happen to me a couple of times where the solenoid still clicked, but was not moving far enough to make contact. With the starter motor off the vehicle its to trouble to strip and clean the solenoid.

Ps. as I learnt the first time, copper slip is not suitable for keeping moving parts free and after a few months was causing the starter motor to stick as bad as the dirt had. cleaned and rebuilt dry the solenoid has lasted much better.

Sorry should have mentioned, disconnected the battery in the car and ran posi and neg leads from a spare battery and it still went click click!!

Mine occasionally clicks like mad before turning over - could this be similar?
