what does this swich do........

i have a disco 1, next to the electric wing mirror switch there is another switch, when i turn it there is a motor noise coming from behind the left hand headlight but cant see what is going on!

Its most likely headlamp levellers, there should be one each side.

i thought that but the headlight beam doesn't seem to move and the noise is only behind the left hand light?

It could be that the right hand one is dead for some reason. The easiest way to check: Remove the headlight unit (as you would when changing the bulb), one of the things it clips onto at the bottom has a vaguely cylindrical thing behind it. A rod should move in and out at the front of this to adjust the headlight when you move the switch.

I agree with the diagnosis already given, does the switch look like this -

If so the two objects behind it are the motors - there will be one behind each headlight and it sounds like they're either stuffed or not connected correctly.
