Towing electrics loom position
« on: August 11, 2008, 12:43:03 »
Hi All

Removed the loomfor the towing electrics as they were shot, looking at the back of the vehicle what side is the electrics for the lights etc.  it had 2 sockets, one fed from the left hand side one fed from the right hand side?

Only want to re-instate the towing electrics for trailer, not running additional electrics on caravan etc etc.

Can you remember which way the 'black' cable went?. That's the 12n cable for the trailer, the other should have been a grey cable which is the the 12s supply for caravan fridges, chargers and reverse lights.

On mine they both go to the right - below the rear light cluster but mine is the TD5 so could be different to your 300.

should be behind the drivers side rear light cluster - multi pin socket for the lights and 2 bullet connectors for the 12S.

I would put the socket into the rear door just left of the spare tyre as it is more central for the leccy cable from the trailer to go otherwise when you go round a right hand corner the cable will probably drag on the ground as the socket will be that much closer to the trailer and a left hand corner will need alot more stretch as it will be further away.

Have a look at my gallery on how I did mine if you like.

As mine has a detachable towbar I put the socket on the rear pillar then bought a short extension, which is fixed to the drop plate. I just plug that into the receiver hitch, plug the extension in, and then my trailer socket is in the normal place. When driving in the mud the drop plate is removed and all the vulnerable electrics are up out of harm's way.

As for the electrics, there's a multipin socket in the rear pillar, also a bullet connector which gives a feed for reversing lights (I think). Mine had three wires running along the chassis for a fixed live and two switched live feeds to the 12S (since removed, although I've left the wires in place for any future power needs in the boot).

Interestingly this was all installed by a LR main dealer, evidently the extra wires for 12S were not installed at the factory as they've had to bolt in extra relays, run wires, and add a couple of inline fuse holders connected to the battery. I've since reused one relay for extra horns and the other for a power socket in the boot.

The remaining bullet connector is a fixed live IIRC - the instructions on the RAVE CD for fitting the auxiliary power socket in the boot make mention of it. I didn't bother using that as it would have needed a wire run the length of the car to activate the relay, rather than just some new connections in the ex-12S wiring.
