td5 split charging
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:27:44 »
hi every body
I need to fit split charge system to my td5 defender
getting good quality relays, wiring and terminals isnt a problem, but have heard that the vehicle charging system is a bit more complex than earlier vehicles?
has any one fitted split charging to a td5 and if so where do you pick up the d+ feed for switching the relay?

cheers kevin

and at this point I noticed the n/s air vent wasnt fully closed so lets not forget the mud stained interior and the water logged kenwood 6disc cd

The easiest way would be to use a voltage sensititve relay like i have.
I used a national luna relay setup -  think it was about £60 - it's been on 2 years now , with absolutely no problems.
The relay is an 85A cole hershee (you can google it) - 85A continuous and rated up to 400A for short periods.
The relay doesn't energise for 5 minutes after starting to allow the start battery to take some charge , then it closes and starts to charge the aux battery.

In fairness , i don't run a winch and never will , so it's been used for running fridges , lighting etc while we're away , but it's completely fit and forget.

If i remember correctly national luna also do a heavier duty relay too.

Hope this is of some use!

Hi,

I have put a split charge on my TD5, and also used a voltage sensitive relay (125amp). Brought mine from Devon 4x4 for £60. Easy to wire up and looks after it's self.
Used 2 odysse's, and was very pleased with them small and powerfull, leaves room for fuse boxes and some spares.

thanks for the advice ,got hold of a good qualitity voltage sensitive relay, but then found i cant fit two batteries in the seat box due to the original battery being a large 110 amp/hr
one. so whats the lowest amperage battery i can get away with? btw the vehicle doesnt have central locking electric windows or any other fancy bits

cheers kevin

You can fit two batteries in a TD5 , you can turn you original and fit a battery such as an 80 amp one or an Odyssey. I did this first then changed later and fitted a pair of Odyssey's, it is tight but can be done.
