just been having another look, and i can just about turn the front n/s wheel when jacked up, and i mean just, by just grabbing the tyre. so persumably its on its way out or is this as bad as they go?

You can just turn the tyre by hand? how far? that sounds about right TBH. The viscous fluid is stiff enough to hold the propshaft flange whilst you do the nuts up.

well done a bit more reading into this on th net and found a test. apparantly with 60ft/lb applied to a wheel nut you should be able to turn the wheel 90 degrees in 60secs. mine takes longer than this but does it, so im gonna persume its ok for now and keep an eye on it. cheers for replying

think this is sorted purely because it seemed so stiff to turn but apparently thats how they should be, only had proper landys before none of this new fangled stuff
