« on: August 28, 2008, 18:44:49 »
I BROUGHT A CHEAP WINCH OF EBAY A COUPL,E OF YEARS AGO AND NOW ITS DECIDED IT DOSENT WANT TO WORK ANYMORE

TROUBLE IS THAT I LIKE THE WATER!!!!!

I HAVE USED THE WINCH MAYBE 10 TIMES BUT IT HAS BEEN ON MY MOTOR FOR A YEAR

I USED IT TODAY AND IT STOPPED WORKING   IVE TOOK IT APART AND ONE OF THE SPRINGS THAT PUSHES THE BRUSHES HAS MELTED . THE ARMATURE LOOKS OK BUT GENERALLY THE INSIDE OF THE MOTOR LOOKS AWFULL DUE TO WATER INGRESS....

NOW  DO I BUY AN EXPENSIVE WINCH AND LET THE SAME HAPPEN OR JUST REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER 200 QUID WONDER????

if i can still see my bonnet then the water aint deep enough!!!!

I'd be inclined to strip, clean, and rebuild the cheap winch. You should be able to find new brushes and brush springs to fit it for a few pence and this won't cost anything but your time.

Buying another cheap one would be a false economy - keep the £200 and put it towards a decent one. If you get another couple of years out of the cheap one it should give you time to save the rest.

Just buy a decent motor for it!
My first winch was an ebay special  Within a year i had killed 2 motors on it   Replaced it with a Champion motor from winch solutions and it now sits on the back of my motor and has been used a few times over the last 18 months with no problem  ;)

Cheers

Champion winches are excellent - maybe not up to your winch challenge events but they are excellent all round pieces of kit - and the warranty covers use in mud n water. Not all winches are covered by a warranty that includs 'off road' abuse use. Worth checking no mater what you buy. Have a friend that bought an expensive branded winch, it packed up first time it went through muddy water and he had a hell of a time getting it sorted even though it was only a couple of months old.

Most of our group (muddy fronteras) run Champion winches of all sizes, including a 10,000lb hydraulic! I use the C15,000N on the front of mine and as said in my previous post i have a Champion winch motor on my rear winch, the ebay special.
As far as i know there has only been one issue with any of these winches that our group use and that was a dodgy solenoid pack which was replaced by Winch Solutions

Personally, if your like me and dont have a massive budget for your off road toys then these products are good value for there money ;)

Cheers

I had the same problem. I couldnt decide which winch to buy, Spend 1k on a good winch you might use a few times a year or buy a cheap one that gets used a few times a year.

I opted for the cheap one (mainly because i am a tight wad) It worked great for the 1st 18 months but it konked out at the DOC national this year.
I stripped the motor down only to find it full of water and sludge. After a good clean out i made some gaskets for the two flanges and used loads of hylomar gasket sealant.

Its been great ever since, but like its been said above you get what you pay for. The last thing you need is for your winch to conk out when you need it most.
