gearbox judder
« on: August 29, 2008, 19:46:52 »
just put another gearbox in my disco, and now when i slow down to stop and put it into neutral the box seems as if the gears are still trying to make the car move.the gearbox judders as if the gears are still engaged ,this carries on for about 10 to 15 secs after i stop ......i did fit a secondhand clutch when doing gearbox cos mine was knackered but cannot see how the clutch could be the problem ...both boxes are ok for oil  :( any thoughts .....thanks ..robbie

p.s it is slightly harder to select the gears but all work fine and there's no slip from the clutch

thanks mate ,but it does it even i coast for the last couple of yards up to a stop sign ,with the gearbox in neutral and the clutch pedal up...this is what i don't understand the gears should be disengaged once neutral is selected ,but they seem to be still trying to mesh  :x

Right, basics.

If the gearbox is not in gear it should turn freely from the input end. If the gears are still engaged it would stall or you would feel like you are being pushed along. Stopping the car tilts everthing forwards, are Your engine and gearbox mountings tight/in good condition? If not that can cause judder.

When in neutral the drives into the box are from the input shaft, but no gears are selected or the Tbox output shaft still being turned by the road wheels via the prop, have you checked Tbox oil levels etc?

Re-reading your post i'm tempted to think that the gear lever linkage is the problem - hard to select and feels like its still in gear - maybe it is? I'm not a gearbox expert but that Ashcroft fella is. I think he posts on LR4x4, maybe he could diagnose it for you.
