possibly a daft question

could any one please help, just bought a 1990 3.9 rangi, gas converted, am very pleased so far, what size bolts are on the rear bumber as want to get some new ones to put new bumper on  thanks , the other question is what type of anti corosion treatmens should I use on the boddy work as got a scabby spot to sort out so it dose not get worse

I stand to be corrected but I think they are 3/8 UNF x 1 1/4".

Most of the outer pannels are aluminium which requires slightly different treatment to steel pannels or the under side of the body and chassis.

I take it then they are on the outside surfaces, in which case the pannels are made from aluminium. You can just paint over aluminium or will flake quite quickly. It will need rubbing down to remove any flaking paint and corrosion (if the bear aluminium looks dull then there is a layer of surface corrosion) and then spraying with an aluminium specific primer before touching up with cououred paint and laquar.

the under lying metal here is steel, though i suspect there is an aluminium skin over the outside surface. If the corrosion under the scabby spot is brown then its steel and if its a whitish then aluminium. The differance with touching up steel is paint keyes onto it much better so you don't need the special primer.


Whilst your taking care of the outside, have a good poke around the less easily visible parts, such as under the carpets and around the sills etc. Range rovers are netorious for hiding their rust.

try taking off the nut or bolt and take it down to the local iron monger/car spares shop and match the threads up.

thats the problem, I am soaking the bolts in allot of wd 40 and see what happens,

thanks all will have a good look under all carpets and stuff,  also going to steam clean underside (propper steam not hot wash) strip of all old crud and re waxoil once dry, I asume this would help priserve things, might smooth right inside floor too if ok before winter
