Strange noise - thrust bearing?
« on: September 16, 2008, 20:13:29 »
Hi guys,

Hope somebody can help.

Today something in the transmission started making a chirping noise. It only does it when I come off the throttle and it stops if I dip the clutch or apply a little throttle. The chirping repeats at a rate proportional to how fast I'm driving, not the engine speed.

I'm thinking it's the thrust bearing. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Martin

I'd second that diagnosis. I would expect a clutch release bearing to make noise when the clutch is depressed.

Just to give an update, it was the rear differential that has failed (lots of metal in the oil!). Quite shocking that its gone after only 25k miles.

Fortunately the Defender is just under three years old, so still covered by the Land Rover warrantee. It's currently at a main dealer in pieces waiting for the new diff but Land Rover don't have any currently and so far haven't been able to even give me a date when they are likely to get a part. The main dealer wanted their courtesy car back, so Land Rover have given me a hire car - a Range Rover Vogue TDV8! Suddenly I don't feel any urgency for them to fix it...
