You will have got crap in the cable..... this then pushes the cable and therefore lever back up slightly, the switch is right under the lever, and a it doesn't take much for the switch not to operate.....
gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

when I first got my Disco, I had the same problem.  The underside is easy to clean, a ford at speed seems to do it

It just kinda came free all on it's own.

Clean out handbrake drum and release mechanism first.

It certainly sounds like a stretched cable, but that could be because you have been pulling the handbrake on extra hard because of the mud in the drum.

If I recall this is also the low brake fluid (or in fact, worn out pads!) warning light, so best to check those too!

I think it's the (P) for hand brake and (!) for brake fluid. They are next to each other........you look at them every time you drive but can't recall them when you need to!  :)

Another god way of cleaning the underside I find is to use one of those garden sprinklers, the type that swings from side to side on the ground under the vehicle and leave it on overnight, nice gentle under body wash ;)

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

the p and i are the same light. My hand brake light was flikering on and off last weekend at abingdon. It turned out to be metal brake pads at the rear. I now have some brake pads with some black stuff on them too!!!
