Abs light reverse only
« on: October 21, 2008, 20:29:26 »
Hi
Any thoughts on this one
Disco v8 1994 Sometimes when starting off in reverse gear the abs light will not go out
Only seems at low speed  and only in reverse. If i turn her off and re start and drive off forwards she is allways OK

Will try the blink test at the weekend

Thanks

The ABS light stays on until 8mph. Do you go past that in reverse?

I understand - the blink test is the next stage then.

I'm still not clear, but perhaps and air gap is marginal and the backlash works against you in reverse, making it bigger.  The ABS doesn't know what gear you are in.

I had exactly the problem you describe, when the hub was checked it was found to be excessive play in the wheel bearing and CV joint causing a change in the air gap, after the items were changed the problem disappeared.

Aren't LRs fun - I can get my ABS warning light (which stays on a lot dues to a knackered axle end case bush allowing the CV to move about) to go OFF if I reverse - pulling away from start up going forward it stays on, but start off by reversing a few feet first and it goes out - how wierd!

Not helping you out any Growler8, just thought I'd share it.......

I'm with RRB that its the back-lash showing up an air-gap problem..........

Thanks for replies
I will  try and explain a bit clearer. 1 select reverse back up 10ft or so light stays on {as it should I think} select first forward gear and drive off light will not go out {Turn ignition off and re start pull of in forward gear all OK light goes out}
2 select reverse back up until light gos out select first forward gear and all remains OK{light out}
3 select first forward gear and drive off {allways OK light allways goes off
4 Light only plays silly games if it is not put out when i reverse

   Thanks again will have a check round her Saturday so any other help greatly appreciated

Yeah sounds very much like an air-gap problem - just tap the sensors back in with a spanner on your 'check round her'....

Its like my fault only in reverse and that usually works for me for a few weeks then I need to do it again.....

I didn't do the blink test on her {Pushed sensors Back in did a few starts and stops and magic shes better for now}
Abs light would always go out if ignition turned off and re started
As mentioned above this was a bit of a funny one
Played up if I reversed for a short distance
Always went out if I pulled of forwards
All is still OK
Blink test uses the blue plug under the drivers side footwell panel   {found it just in case}  good instructions link found on this web site {Used it before on the last truck 1990 3.9 efi Range Rover

Cheers
Rich
