Jimny vacuum hubs
« on: October 28, 2008, 13:08:26 »
Does anyone know an easy way to beef up the vacuum pipes that work the free wheeling hubs on a Jimny. I'd like to keep the original hubs and not switch to manual locking ones because of the convenience of the standard ones but I caught the flexible section of the pipe where it goes from the radius arms to the axle and split it some time ago. I have bodged a fix so that everythings working but I could do with a more long term beefed up fix that will take dragging the axles and radius arms through the mud without losing 4wd.

Opinions and recommendations would be appreciated.

Steve.

Tried everything but found the 'steel' part of the system rotted and caused more probs than the rubber pipe. Replaced parts of the system with 'Nylon' vaccum pipe, but in the end went manuel. These arn't that much hassel as you might think. As its the transfer box that engages 4wd and 2wd its OK to drive on the road in 2wd with the hubs locked in - the only down side is that the fron drive shafts and diff will be turning and causing drag, but as they arn't connected to the rest of the drive system in 2wd theres no risk of damage to the CV's etc. Once you've finished in the mud - dissengaged the hubs and go home.  On issue I had with the vaccum system was that when i pulled or split a pipe the system dragged water into the swivel housing causing bearing damage.

Cheers both, the advice is much appreciated.

Think the best bet in the long run is going to be manual hubs really because the vacuum pipes really are exposed when your dragging your axles etc through the mud!

On that note wheres best to get manual hubs from, I've heard that sammy/vit ones fit but need a spacer, does anywhere do Jimny ones that are a straight swap?

Mine does this as well, its just drag in the system.

its only a problem if you cannot rotate the front wheel when the front propshaft is "locked" (ie. in gear). If this is the case then your hubs are locked on.
