hi there had a drive in a 300 tdi defender tonight, made my 200 tdi feel and sound like a tractor, have been thinking there were something wrong with my motor for a while now it is just so slugish and feels ruf got to the stage now that 50 mph is max, it starts on turn of the key in all weathers, uses no oil or water blows no bad smoke out, recently had oil and filters changed, is there a big difference in performance between the two engines and if not where do i start to rectify problem, any advice would be appreciated Iain

300tdi's in defenders are slightly up on power over the 200s due to the nature of the turbo's
lack of power would suggest a blockage in the fuel or air system
try a new fuel and air filter, although you say they have been replaced, all kinds of crud comes out of the fuel stations these days, and anything could have been sucked into the induction system to block the air filter
lift pumps fail and generally the engine wont rev above 3k, theres also a slight stutter and in-balance at idle
intercoolers clog with oil deposits from the turbo causing a lack of ( denser) or cooled air into the engine causing overfueling ( black smoke ) and loss of power
when were the tappets last checked and adjusted ?
there are a whole lot of things that can cause loss of power, but it usually comes down to something silly
for ref, my std road 90 will do 70mph easy with 33inch tyres on
and my competition 90 (200) thats tweaked to the max will do way way way way over 70...i cant say actual figures because that would get me into trouble :lol: :lol:
put it this way though, chav mobiles cant get away from me, but i cant get away from them :lol:

thanks for the swift reply, will let you know how i get on, to be honest ive hed landy for around 3 years and it would never do 70 mph so must be something wrong, would be great to give it some ooommph

when your next down to about a 1/4 of a tank of fuel run some Forte (or similar diesel additive) through the system......you may be suprised at the difference!!
you can tweak the fueling and the turbo but to be honest its not worth doing until the engine is running well (which yours clearly isn't)
It may be worth popping the intercooler and hoses off and having a look what is going on there...the intercooler could be washed out with parafin and THOROUGHLY dried afterwards.....the turbo pipes could of de laminated inside and be causing a blockage in airflow......or when you take the airpipes off you could find that your turbo has issues (when you can see the impellor)
anyway....i'd start with a diesel additive (cheapest easiest fix first lol)

hi there, have used millers diesel addative for a while now, im sure it made difference at first but not now, how do you go about cleaning the intercooler out, sounds like a prosses of elimination is the way to go starting at the cheap end ;)

remove it then back flush it ( top to bottom) with parrafin or petrol
i usually fil them with petrol and leave for a hour
then give it a good old shaking
and tip away the crud
refit but then leave the top hose off
start it up and leave it running abit, the slight draft and heat generated by the turbo will dry it out

If you know how, check the fuel pump diagphram for perishing & splits. Only do this if you know what you are doing & mark everything so goes back in same place. ;)

Once you have exhausted the fuel/air system checks I would be checking the timing. I had this on my 200 so I know it can cause the symptoms you have because I had the same.
The 200 TDi has a nasty habit of the bottom pulley bolt on the crank coming slightly loose (normally caused by the sudden cooling when fording) this allows the vee belt pulley and the timing belt pulley to chater together leading to movement between the crank and the pulley mating faces. This in turn (over time) can cause the key way in the both pulleys to become elongated and in my case, the crank shaft too. The movement I had was about 10-15 deg, dosen't sound a lot but once I changed the components and timed it up properly it went like a train.
As an asside my 1993 200 went better than my current 1998 300
