my first v8 and......its all going wrong
« on: November 09, 2008, 17:40:39 »
Iv had 3 diesel discos but this is my first v8 and......im not happy

so my v8 disco, which iv had on the road now for 3 day has started cutting out every 500 yards or so and wont restart for 5 min or so after.

Its a 3.9 on single point lpg, but it cutting out on both fuels.

Its only been doing it since it started raining, eg i drove 130 miles yesterday and it didn't miss a beat the niped out in the rain to drop my son off and it made it 1/2 a mile then cut out and again 3 more time on the same 1/2 mile home.

I took it for a short run this morning and its no better, then home this evening and didn't even make it out the compound.

After punching the wheel and hurting my wrist'!"! I took the air filter out and drove home (on petrol, but tried gas in the street seamed fine) it was ok .

The air filter wasn't new but not so dirty id worry about it, possibly damp?? but think im hoping that's all it is

Any Ideas????????????

Welcome to the fun of v8,s first off were is your evaporator fitted mine was fitted near the bottom of the inner wing and it would cut out in wet weather ad it moved to behind the headlight and no problem. Check the dissy and leads if they look old or of not good make change them as that wont help in wet weather as the fan sucks wet air onto the dissy.

After punching the wheel and hurting my wrist'!"!

I did that. Jammed the horn on and drove home redfaced - thankfully a short 1mile journey.

Yea seconed that mine cut out when the coil got hot after a few mins it would start up again only to die a few mins later whe it warmed up. Changed coil and it didnt do it again

ok so thats not too bad , its still bugs me that it was fine all day then it had problems as soon as it started to rain?

Any way ill fit a coil and air filter tomorrow as i spoke to some one who seams to think its sensitive to even slight air blockages?

Also noticed some sort of plug on the top half of the air box, but nothing plugged in?

Draw through LPG systems are very sensitive to air flow yes but he EFi shouldn't be.

with out wanting to jinxes any thing,
i changed the air filter.. no change so changed the coil and it seems to be running ok.

now i did notice that the the coolant tank lid was loose, so looked in side it was empty i think there was nothing at all :? im hoeing that the cap was loss from when i checked it after i got it home and it all steamed out.(well thats what im telling my self) i filled it up and ran it no sign of oil so fingurs crossed. iv never notice the needle showing any hoter than half or any steam coming out?

I am starting to think about taking i shouldn't have changed from what i knew.

ok, well its running now but things just keep getting wore.

The coil did fix the problem of it not running , but since i lost all the water iv been keeping an eye on the water level and today i noticed a leek.

It looks like water is seeping out / dripping from were the head meets the3 block on the right hand side at the front.

Im assuming its a head gasket job. but am going to pressure test if first and see if i can get away with rad weld or similar?

Other options are

sell it quick

Put the v8 from my bobtail build strait in.

Put my engine and box from my 300 im selling in.

With petrol prices falling pour a can over the roof and go from there!
