Towing - is it legal
« on: November 13, 2008, 23:35:21 »
I am looking at towing a 1984 LR 90 to sites using a dolly.

Is it legal to tow it without MOT, Tax and insurance (I think it is). I do have a license to tow

Secondly, is it legal to use these dolly's in France. The car is in the middle of France at the moment and i wanna bring it over here to use off road.

The MOT ran out about 18 months ago so driving it back is not an option.

If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

In a word NO..

The towed vehicle must be fully taxed tested and insured to be on a dolly or a-frame IIRC

A trailer saves a lot of grief
Hit it till it breaks then hit it some more !

The guy selling the dolly states that it is legal.....

YOU CAN USE THE AFRAME ON THE MOTORWAY AND ALSO USE IT TO TOW VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT TAXED MOT'D OR INSURED

mmhh, most odd that one, is it DEFINATELY illegal?? I dont have the room for a trailer but I do for a 90 without one :(

You can hire trailers for such tasks. It would be a wise move if in doubt.

Another point is to use one with a 90 you need to remove the rear prop.

On another point, towing a 90 back and then using a ferry will cost a fortune!! cheaper to buy a 90 over here.

If there is no tax OR MOT then all 4 wheels MUST be lifted.
I know this cause when I went to a VOSA VIC inspection the letter stated this, and also stated that if it arrived on anything less than a trailer or on the back of a truck, the inspection would NOT be carried out.

NO NO NO, I dont want ANOTHER car!!!

It is doing nothing over there and it is a shame for it to be idle. Ferry costs are not too bad really, I have done the trip with trailers in the past, I think that is the option. I dont know what I will do with it when it comes back.... I dont really have the room but then I will worry about that when it gets here :)

Take it back to where you hired it from. I think High Peak Trailers might be near you - give them a call they may be able to help.
