Yes you can...

However, it nees to be programmed correctly!!! i.e. files suitable for an Defender EU2 engine - as the later flash ECU's are for to EU3 spec engines. (and you need a ECU from a manual LR, not a Disco Auto)

You will also have to swap the injector codes, and 'learn' the engine ECU to the 10AS alarm unit.

Why do you want to swap ECU's??

Good reason to change it then....

All you need to do is get yourself a NNN500020 or NNN000120 ECU and have it programmed with the correct files for your early spec engine... swap the injector codes, and teach it to the car and jobs a good'un.

(I can do all of the above if needed)

Hi Ian have got the NNN500020 ecu, but have been told it may drop the throttle when programmed and leave it in limp home mode, it may happen immediately or at a later time and it has happened a number of times to the mechanic who deals with defenders as his job, is this common or is there a way round it

Hrmmm....  if it happens quite often, does the mechanic not know why or how to rectify it??

Basically there are two types of throttle - 2 pot, and 3 pot.  Early Td5's (pre about 2001) have a 2 pot/track throttle, later Td5 have 3.  With the wrong settings, the throttle may not work.

If you put a later ECU on an early car as well as changing injector coding etc etc, you need to change the throttle settings - so that it knows the throttle is a 2 pot (for an early td5).  You must also use the correct files for an early engine!!!  - there are a lot of differences between a late and an early ECU, and you must use the correct files to suit these differences... don't let any bodge it by telling you all Td5's are the same regardless of age.
