Hi all
I have never had a problem starting my 90. (it's a 1988 with defender 200tdi transplant) until yesterday.
It starting fine having been sat for a week. I then drove it approx 40 miles to where I was meeting someone. When I went to start it again, nothing.... wouldn't even turnover. We got it going by bumpstarting it. I then ran it for 3 hours without turning it off. Stopped for lunch for 20 mins after which it started straight away. Stopped later on and again it started fine.
Got back home, a return journey of 40 miles, parked up and went to restart and had the same problem. I heard one click but that was it, would not turn over.
I went out this morning and it started straight away! If it starts tomorrow morning I will drop in to my garage on the way to work, in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem? Any ideas? Is it coincidence that it wouldn't start after two longish journeys (40 miles at a constant 55mph on the A34)?

I had a similar problem with my 90Td5...I chased the problem for hours & it turned out to be loose terminals on the starter motor.
I took them off, cleaned them, tightened them back up & haven't had a days problem since.
I sudggest you start there & do the earth strap to chassis & battery connections whilst your at it

I think you should check the engine earth strap as that can have the same sort of symptoms. :-k

sounds like starter solenoid, next time give it a wack with a mallet see if it works.

Welsh by birth,mad by nature. Prefer to use offroad sites these days due to to many council doo dahs and awfully well spoken people who have bought property's in the country but were never bought up out in the sticks. Still striving to improve the 90, not much left now only front locker.
Mods to date, 300 tdi with allisport full width intercooler, recon L77 with disco transfer box, detroit truetrack on rear axle, 40mm lift with H/D springs es9000 shocks, fully polybushed, full external roll cage and rock sliders, steering and diff guards,winch bumper with 12000lb winch, new stering box, pump, rad, ect ect. Also have a 1976 2 door rangie on the back burner back in Wales, however due to the price of fuel it will have to simmer for a while yet.
Previous Landy's include, ex army 1968 109", 1984 RR v8, 1988 RR v8, 1971 series 3 v8, 1993 Disco v8, 1992 Disco tdi, now owned by my good friend "woodentop"

Last time I had that problem the starter was shot, full of mud and muck when I took it to bits.

Just had simular problem with my 300TDi (same starter as 200). Took it apart and cleaned brushes and stator, now works fine again. :dance: One of the bushes had twisted and jammed so reassembled wih some graffited grease. Sealed with silicon sealant on rebuild. Hope this helps.

Hi all
have been speaking to the garage all week and it's now sorted.
The problems??
Well......
It has always started, albeit relucantantly when cold, it took a lot of turning over. Turns out that when the 200tdi was fitted the previous owner (who fitted it) did not wire in the glow plugs.
They tested the battery which was at the end of it's life so that's been replaced
They found a problem with the starter lead so replaced that. It fired up much easier. They left it over night and tried it again this morning and it was really reluctant to start so...
they tested the glow plugs (dead) and replaced these and wired them in.
Still no joy
Swapped the starter for their test unit. Bingo! Apparantly a swine to swap as previous owner had welded the exhaust manifold (?) and the previous starter motor on it showed evidence of being forced into place.
they spent over five hours on it but happily have only charged me for two.
Anyway, now fixed :D
