Disco 200Tdi Into 2.5td Defender
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:12:56 »
Hi guys,
A friend of mine has a dead 2.5 Td in his Ninety (snapped timing belt), and although we could probably straighten the push-rods etc, the problem of a welded on bottom pulley would still be an issue...So he is thinking of putting a 200Tdi from a Disco in. Can anybody tell us whether this would be a straight forward swap, engine mounts, bell-housing, radiator etc.
The Ninety already has Disco axles on it.
Cheers,
Richard.

Cheers for that Steve  :D, we've got the option of a complete Disco, so may well use the rest of the drive train as well, and a 300 defender radiator/inter cooler is in the garage too :D

I guess it will be a choice of two evils, use the disco gearbox but probably have to move the engine mounts or use the original 'box and alter the exhaust. Either way we can sort it, I'm more of a V8 man so it will be a bit of a learning curve with the diesel  :)

Did this conversion on my 1986 2.5NAD 90 last December & it was well worthwhile. Had to replace the starter motor a couple of weeks ago, which is a real pain if everything wont come undone easily. Before fitting engine I would advise making sure that the exhaust manifold to turbo studs / nuts can be removed as if seized they are difficult to remove once the engine is fitted, as the exhaust downpipe & manifold need removeng to get the starter out. Also fitted rear axle from donor Disco, disc brakes a huge improvement. Good luck.

a 300tdi rad is deifferent to a 200tdi unit
ive got a 200disco engine in my comp motor,
used to run that on the disco gearbox, but you have to move the engine forward to do so
i sat the gearbox on its existing mounts to retain std prop sizes aswel
however i then changed to a r380 unit, but now have gone back to a defender style lt77 ( longstick)
it is far easier to leave the existing box there and just bolt the engine to it, fit the backplate or flywheel housing of the td engine to the 200 so you dont need to arse around drilling and tappings new holes
you can then either make your own down pipe
buy one ( £100 ish)
or cut the bulkhead out abit

or do like ive done and fitted a 300tdi turbo, and put the snorkel behind the cab ( long story...but got miffed about denting snorkels and loosing tops all the while  )
