« on: November 20, 2008, 23:35:16 »
browsing through youtube like ya do when your bored and found this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS7CZIJVxFY

it is analising a song called lateralus by a band called tool and it is one of my favorite songs
now, call me mr old fashon for thinking this but over analasis on a SONG is a little bit sad and takes away the purpose of the song.
although a very good analasis i feel the song has been ruined:(

any thoughts?

Depends if the artist(s) intentionally built in the Fibonacci sequence with clues to that fact in the composition, in which case I would suspect the analyzer who made this video has been fully briefed of 'hidden' content by the original production team. Probably with the motive to leak meaning because the artists got bored because no one notice how clever they where  8-[

Either that or he has taken waaaaaaaaaaaay too much LSD/autistic voyant and his mental blocking filters are removed to be able to notice such things and make them fit a random song

What ever the story is behind this, it's a bit of harmless flim flam but I guess it could screw with your perception if you heard and gained a fondness of the song before hand as you may have built you own personal meaning into it already.

Cover versions are only any good if you never heard the original, like Don McCLean's "American pie", or Mark Cohen's "walking in Memphis" that was murdered by cher.

They say that being coppied is the ultimate flattery, well I reckon that those who can't write their own stuff are the most talentless bunch of (insert insult of your choice here) going.  And don't evenm get started on the "X" factor, it should be the "Y" factor (pronounced WHY).

There are exceptions, but few and far between.

Just my 2 penneth.

I'd always loved the quirky production and overtly sinister nature of Nine Inch Nials 'Hurt'. Then Johnny Cash released his version and it's simplicity and heartfelt nature just blew me away. Then there's Muses awesome 'Feeling Good'.

Cover versions can work, and I see nowt wrong with folk putting their spin on the music; sometimes it's to your taste, sometimes it ain't. Heck, it's happened with classical music for centuries. Folk song has always been seen to be an evolutionary medium as well. Modern pop and rock isn't any different. Long may it continue.

With regards to Boss's question - no, I don't think the song has been destroyed (the song's waaaaay bigger than a you-tube clip). Its just someone putting their spin on the concepts of the song. Knowing Keenen's writing, the dude might be right too! Lets face it, the guy is intellectually brilliant (even if his music isn't to everyones taste). I think the real question is 'do you agree with the interperatation?'

Ok, fair comment.  So can anyone think of a track that was covered by someone else better than the original :-k

Oooooo, I'll disagree with that one, but I'm an old folkie at heart!

Better than the original? Toughie but Cash's - 'Hurt' gets my vote as one of the few I can think of.

It's an interesting question that one. Anyone else any ideas?

Jeepers, I'd forgotten about that one, Boss!

I'll be honest, I disliked Lennons original - that's a definate improvement!

.....but it's all down to personal taste! (he says, hoping to placate an army of enraged Lennon fans!  )

Just to add further insult, I think Souxsie and the Banshees did a better version of 'Dear Prudence'  8-[
