Which Battery
«
on:

Hi,
The alternator on the 300 has decided tp produce 14.75v and has fried the Battery, so I'm buying a new alternator but, was wondering which battery i'm better off getting ( should I go for a optima red top for instance), or should I just get 2 standard batteries and wire them in parallel? any thoughts apprecaited, thanks.

Is your vehicle standard or modified? and if modified what sort of things do you want the battery/s to run. winch/ roof lights etc

I want to add a Kenlowe and Roof lights, and would like a winch when funds allow, but since i have to replace the alternator, and the battery thought it would be the ideal time to add more capability, but can't decide if I'm better off with a pair of matched batteries say 2x 072 or an optima red top as the price is about the same.

im now in the process of the similar set up,but im leaving the standard battery where it is,and having a optima or something similar, and fitting a split charging system,if you dont know what that is,it charges both batteries, and if you flatten your battery through winching or your lights, you will still be able to start the vechile :D

Surely you can, take a feed off the caravan feed if you have both sockets on your towbar, just to charge the second battery. Thanks for pointer on the batteries i shall have look on the X-eng site. my new alternator should be here to day.

Ahh the caravan one would work but no good if I fit a winch, I take it if I use a split chare system I don't need a matched pair of batteries?

I have a leisure and marine battery on my disco (or at least i did!) and that ran my winch fine as owt. I could leave it parked up for ages and would always fire up first time. Once i left the lights on and flattened it and it was good as new again after a hour on the battery charger :)

I have a leisure battery in the primary slot and a battery from a scapped tranny van in trap 2. A length of fat (Battery size) cable between both +ve's and an earth strap to the chassis beneath.
No split charging, no battery matching or anything else fancy. I run an inverter, multiple 12v internal bits and bobs, a winch and 4 roof lights and 2 work lights. Plenty of power for everything, I regularly off road at night so all these things run at once. I've shared out the loads between batteries, mainly due to space on the terminals and which side of the truck is more convenient.

I have heard alot about the optima batteries and personally i would have one. They are a dry cell battery and can be sealed. They are also alot better with vibration. overall they are a good battery. In my old car days and having big stereo systems original batterys didn't quite do it. A pal of mine had one (yellow) and he done a sound off at a car show for about an hour (blasting) and the car started after no probs.
