Cornwall... an attraction to avoid!
« on: December 23, 2008, 14:27:53 »
Came to Goonhilly's visitor centre today. It's branded as "Future World" with glossy pamphlets telling about interactive exhibitions etc etc.

What that amounts to is being bussed out to a building amongst the antennas, told 10 mins in the first room... with little interactivity I struggled to fill 10 minutes. Room 2 was a film show, that basically preached the whole "We're killing the planet" message. Room three was an exercise in collecting opinions using a pc based survey (with some very pointed questions with limited answers available). There was a "robot", well... a remote control stationary body controlled by a pc based interface... oooohhh... aint that exciting!

Basically, I'm terribly disappointed. At the end of the visit I have no idea why they named it future world as there didn't seem to be any connection to it.

The previous day, we went to the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum. A couple of tunnels dug into the rock where the first Transatlantic cab;e came ashore. Lots of static displays of old telegraphy equipment and real engineers giing talks, demos and generally explaining things in an interesting & engaging manner.

So... the new world or the old...?

Of the two... Porthcurno was a far better attraction and I'd recommend a trip there if your in the area... Goonhilly... stand on a nearby hill and take some pics...!

That surprises me about Goonhilly. I went there a few years ago and the displays were very good, geared towards Space and all that sort of stuff. The kids loved it.
