« on: December 28, 2008, 00:06:43 »
hi folks just a little question do all disco 1 200tdi gear boxes crunch slightly when changing down or up to second gear?  or do I need to be almost stoped before I change to second? do I need to be looking out for a Good second hand box?

The LT77 (fitted to the 200 TDI) suffered from poor lubrication which can be solved by a crossdrilled mainshaft. Then again, mine's a 300 and has always taken a bit of effort to get into 2nd when cold, it seems to be a standard thing.

2nd gear on any box is usually the one that suffers form worn Synchro, it has the hardest life.

Do an oil change on it, probably hasn't been changed in ages

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40

I don't think that's connected to the crunching.  Later LT77 gearboxes denoted LT77S had the lubrication problem fixed.

Give it a good couple of oil changes over the next couple of months and it should help
