can i remove my viscou fan as i am sick of propeller action in water..i am told the 200 tdi lump should stay cool?

as said above diesals are overly cooled rip it off or if u get worried chuck a eletric fan in an wire up a switch so u can turn it on or off when u want

Not so much that diesels are overcooled but that at part load they are far more efficient so produce less heat.  I've just been out in the wife's and TBH in traffic the engine won't stay warm enough with the heater on :-.

Sit on the motorway and it gets plenty warm, stick a trailer on the back in the summer and start worrying about the temperature.

By this age most viscous fans aren't working 100% anyway, they are too stiff at rest and too slippy when needed.  Add that to a silted rad and you might have problems.

But TBH in this weather take it off, if you leave it in the boot you can always refit it, you don't need any tools to put it back on just patience, line up the thread and spin it up hand tight.

IIRC it might be a RH thread on the 300TDi, usually Viscous fans are LH thread but you can work it out by looking at the angle of the blades.

One thing though, if you bin the fan you have less cooling on the intercooler because the viscous fan keeps air going through it all the time.  I'd thought about putting a small fan on just for the intercooler (in ours it would be in the space the original intercooler fitted) and have it run just when the engine is at full throttle, when you need the intercooler most.

But you know what thought did........

im lucky cuz mines got air con on it so if temp guage does look like its goin up i just knock the air con fans on an they normally sort it out

You need to check the switches on the thermostat housing elbow then mate, one of them is supposed to do that for you automatically :)

Also, on a V8 if the fuel rail temp gets too high then the fans switch on if the car is parked :-.

it does but i unplugged it an used wirin to a switch as i didnt want it to come on when off roadin my mates v8 one with air con comes on automatically if it gets too warm for the electric fan to cool down

Ah, righto yes.  Not good to have the fans come on when you've dunked it.  TBH not a probelm I've ever had with mine which are fully auto Kenlowes.  I tend to find the water cools the rad enough.

ive never had em come on myself but was just a precaution just nice to be able to switch it on as an when i wanna not when the car decides to an it would be my luck when i wanted it to come on it wouldnt as after all it is a land rover lol

my kenlowe is run by x eng thermostat but got the over ride on that so i can switch it either to off - perm on - or run by thermostat
