200TDI won't Start ?
« on: January 04, 2009, 14:43:50 »
Hi

A friend of mine has a 200tdi Disco, he went to whaddon off roading, drove home fine, parked up and when he came out the next morning could not start the disco.

The engine turns over but will not fire, he also got his brother to tow him and try and bump start it. again no joy.

Anyone have an ideas suggestions .

Thanks

Steve

If it's turning over fine and not starting with a tow i'd say it's a fuel fault, try changing the fuel filter.

I had exactly the same problem on my 300TDI. Check the fuel stop solenoid. Take a 12v feed straight off the battery to it and see if it starts then. If it does then obviously theres your problem, just remember you'll have to remove the direct feed to switch off the engine.

this is what I have done but put a switch inside the cab to turn engine off. It starts on the key once the switch is flicked to on. Passed the mot like it. :D

This will eliminate the problems said above or it could be the imobiliser.

I asked at my local landy stealer about resetting the imobiliser and was told what I have done is probably better then landrovers imobiliser especially as I havent marked the switch up as stop start etc so anyone getting in the disco doesnt know what the switch does. Also plus point is you can leave the engine running whilst you nip inside to get that item you forgot or on a icey morning the engine wil warm up and you can lock the disco whilst your inside and the steering wheel lock is active too.  :D Its just the heater blowers wont work until the key is put back in.

Check the timing belt hasn't snapped. (Turn the engine over, take the oil filler off and make sure the tappets are moving).

As suggested, put a live feed on the fuel solenoid. AFAIK this should also bypass the immobiliser if that is the problem.

Also check that you haven't split a fuel pipe (Take the bleed screw off the top of the fuel flter and pump the lift pump by hand until fuel comes out, this will also bleed any air in there).

Crack off No. 1 injector and turn the engine over to make sure there is definately fuel getting into the engine.

As for bump starting snapping your cambelt, well if you are really aggressive and bang the clutch up, Im sure it wouldn't do it much good, but Ive bump started loads of vehicles with no problems. I used to start the John Deere by rolling it down the hill everyday for about 5 months until I replaced the starter motor with no problems.

Ok bit of an update.

He has checked for fuel by loosening the pipes to the injectors, and has got fuel there. someone has told him that the glow plugs aren't working and he is going to change those, but would that stop it starting when being bumped.

Any other ideas.

no, it shouldn't really, all the glow plugs are there for is to give heat for easier starting when the engine iscold. have you tried the live feed straight to the stop solenoid? it isa common problem that these stick. when you get a live to it, it should click.

as an aside, if the cambelt is old and worn, then maybe it will slip on the cogs, but i havent snapped one yet. i've done it plenty of times, but there could still be that danger that it will happen one day.

200 tdi does not need glow plugs ! direct injection !

That is nonsense, they are there for a reason, and starting a cold engine without using them will only accelerate engine wear...
Just becasue it will start without Glow-plugs, it doesn't mean yuo should start it without glowplugs...

Must admit I've always been a bit puzzled by the people saying that the 200 and 300TDI don't need glow plugs - LR would hardly have gone to the effort of fitting them if they weren't needed. I suspect they're unnecessary in summer but for the coldest days of the year they're the difference between starting first turn and churning away for a few seconds.
