Sarn Helen
« on: January 16, 2009, 14:39:26 »
Hi I phoned the Brecon Beacons National Park today and asked the legality of the Sarn Helen knowing its closed just to find out dates of closure, the lady said it was closed in November 2006 but the signs didn't go up until last year, does anyone know when the signs went up?

If anyone does know any info it would be handy, cheers.

I know people who are working on getting the signs removed. But if it is closed then the road to the vistors centre is also closed as well.

I went up there on new years day.
The road out of the visitors center to the right is closed. The one across the road on the left towards the farm house is open. Once you cross the second tared road there is a sign up by the 2nd farm house.

Is this the section starting South of Brecon? Have seen some pre-2006 photos, it's not going to suffer any damage from vehicle use as it's solid rock!

I still nurse the forlorn hope that this one will be snatched back from the jaws of NERC.

Spotted this in the latest issue of Total Off Road magazine...

Sarn Helen Roman Road - Your Help Needed

The Green Lane Association (GLASS), Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) and Llanerchindda Farm are compiling user evidence to back up claims that Sarn Helen should remain open for vehicle use.

If you drove or rode Sarn Helen (Ordnance Survey grid reference from SN 879 118 to SN 927 167 and from SN 924 185 to SN 962 242) between 16th November 2001 and 16th November 2006, they want to hear from you.

Please contact info@cambrianway.com asking for a copy of the form that you will need to fill in.

It's a great area to drive... I've done it twice... and it would be wrong if it was closed!

My form is printed along with printouts of some photos. I will pop it in the post today.

The almost the  whole length of the RB sections are rock based and in little, if any, danger of damage. Only one soft spot and that had tons of rock put in it by CRAG some years ago so is no longer soft.

Annoyingly the locals arn't even a problem, in fact, the farmer at the most southern end of the RB section is positivly friendly!

Best time to do it was in the summer starting in Neath. The southern BOAT section opens 1st june for 3 months and you can do around 50+ miles of green lanes with only around 2 miles of tarmac.

If we can get back one RB then I really hope it is this one.
