Disco II V8 CONVERTING TO A 300TDI
« on: January 20, 2009, 00:27:18 »
Hi there,

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if anyone has gone from the 4ltr V8 in the Series II Discovery to the old 300 tdi.  My V8 is burning oil at the moment so is looking like the piston rings may have worn.  Im thinking of converting to a 300tdi instead of bothering to fix the current V8.

My reason to this is to get rid of the problems with the V8 getting wet wen off roading and causing problems.

Any advice on this would be great,

Thanks,

Ed  :-k

I wouldn't imagine the central ECU would be too pleased about the absence of the engine management system...

I was pondering this the other day and the conclusion i came to was the same as rich p,but i have never worked on a disco 2,I suppose that it could be done if you ripped everything out and replaced it with everything from the 300 tdi but thats major work and you would have to buy a complete 300 for the looms etc,and to be honest thats way out of my league.

what wiring would u need for a 300 tdi to run a ignition live for the stop start solinoid (sp) a wire for oil light a wire for temp guage an wires from alt to battery an starter motor so therotically u could just rip out all the v8 wiring loom an ecu as u wouldnt need it but wouldnt it be better to use a td5 instead of a 300

Craig, if the D2 ECU is anything like the P38, then pretty much every function on the car (be it indicators, headlights, heaters, electric windows and mirrors etc.) will operate through or from the central ECU.  In appearance it may be similar to the 300 Series, but underneath it is a completely different vehicle.

ive never stripped one down but knowin land rover your right as it makes it more complicated to have just 1 ecu that does it all then a few seperate ones :P

I wasnt planning on doing it myself  . Have spoken to MRM about it, it was them who sugested it to me as an option I could consider.  Im just tryin to work out how much it would cost at the moment.  Its an automatic at the moment, but I would go to a manual.  I was told I would need a complete 300 tdi as a doner car and they would swop everything over.

Any idea how much I would get for the engine and auto box?

Ive been advised that the td5 would not be a good route to go as there still over complicated.  Swapping to the tdi was to eliminate any problems with off raoding in wet muddy condiotions and wading through deep water?!

Im still not sure if it the right thing todo as the car drives so smoth at the moment, and am worried it mite make it a little bit like a tractor  :-o  But then if it solves the issues with getting wet maybe it is the right way to go  :|

Has no one done this before?

Thanks for your help guys

Ed

the money its gonna cost ya id buy an old 300 tdi an just use an abuse it off road an get the v8 fixed as my v8 is the family car as i can hear the passengers an as u say is so smooth an responsive unlike my moms 300 but its how deep ya pockets are but just think if u put a 300 in a d2 then the valve of car dramatically drops  but as i say fix the v8 an buy an old disco to abuse will be cheaper an u know it makes sense y abuse a nice disco off road when u can pick em up now dirt cheap

I see what your saying, its things which im trying to weigh up. depends on how much the engine and box are worth which I have got at the moment.

Do you think it would devalue the car then?  I wasnt to sure?  It would make it more ideal to some people surley?!

So you'd rather plug into every individual 20 or so ECUs throughout the vehicle rather than have a central unit that communicates with them all for you?  :-o

People won't really know what they're buying unless they're really into mechanic stuff and Land Rovers.  There's also the insurance implication you need to think about, as it would become a drastically modified vehicle when it comes to the running gear.

Different again.  The D2 is longer.

oh right so u would have to either lengthen 300 chassis or shorten d2 body me personally mate id fix the v8 d2 an either sell it or keep it for best an buy a 300 disco to abuse as personally i think this would be the most cost effective way

Given how much you can pick a DII up for now I would let the drop in value affect your decision.
