Transfer Box Oil
« on: March 08, 2005, 16:30:50 »
The RRC Manuel says Dexion for the transfer box & Haynes says 80/90, which one is right?.  I would guess the Workshop Manuel in saying Dexion but best ask to be sure.
Full service started, all going well (so far).  Put Millers Magnol20/50 in the engine, we have a Morgan dealer close by & he recommended it. Apparently all Morgans come from the factory running on Miller Oils, not very well known as they don't advertise but should be good if they use it.--Cogs

The Borg & Warner box (no manual diff lock) uses ATF, the LT230 uses EP.

Thanks Tim, mine just has the high/low lever so I guess it must be the one that uses ATF, it's a 1990 3.9 vogue efi.  Am I right?--Cogs

If you have only High/Low and no diff lock on the lever, then yes.. the workshop manual is correct.

Does it hurt to run a BW on ep80/90?

I would think it has the potential to do a fair bit of damage...  the relative viscosity of EP compared to ATF for a start could cause problems with the oil pump and general lubrication, aside from the actual operation of the viscous unit.

Ok understand about the pump but isn't the viscous unit sealed for life?

Quite possibly.... but it's a mute point anyway unless you have a good reason to put the wrong oil in the transfer box.

Car used to belong to a bit of a berk, so I'm not sure what's in there.
