They sound great !!!  :lol:

I'm pondering selling my motorway-mile-munching Grand Cherokee & my offroading/green-laning Defender to avoid 2 lots of tax, insurance, mot's, repairs etc & buying a Cruiser, which in theory sounds like it's well capable of covering all those functions with ease !

From reading this & various other forums, I've narrowed it down to a UK 80 series 4.2TD auto from between 92 - 95 as these have diff-locks centre, front & rear and seem to be hailed as Toyota's best ever offerings & just about bullet-proof !

My only slight reservation at the moment is their age - mpg doesn't bother me.

Anyone have any observations/comments which might help me decide whether to or not  ?

 Does anything slightly newer have diff-locks or terrain control systems ? The market just seems a bit narrow being limited to 92 - 95 models & even the latest of these is nearly 14 years old now.  :smiley:

But do not worry about the millage, mine had 171k miles on it when I got it.

Things to look out for are BEB, as most recon to change them. Diff locks working or not. Other than that its just the normal stuff. Theres one on OZ that had done over a 1,000,000 miles on the orignal engine and box.

Upgrades cost a bit more that a LR and most have to be ordered in, but other than that they are ok. The years your looking at the best ones to get, the later auto (best) and larger brakes. I have 35/12.5/16s on mine and still get 19mpg (worked over 4 full tanks of diesel and 50% laneing).

 Like you, I'm expecting an 80 to do all the things my Defender & Jeep currently do - including pay & plays !

 I guess I need to go for a late model if it's a '92 so I get the better gearbox & bigger brakes ?

 How do you find yours on normal roads with those tyres on ?

 Thanks for the link to Ron's truck, but I'd rather go for the later model. I'm in no great rush & want to try & find the nicest one I can. If you or anyone hears about one for sale, be sure to let me know  :smiley:

Mine is fine, but it would be better if I pit more air in the tyres as I leave them at 16psi all the time.

There is always lots of ebay, there was a nice late import with lockers not long ago. Low milage, but got good money.
