come on then! whos been pulling people out of the snow and subsequent mud? i had a blinder earlier, the bloke had drove on the grass and spun in upto his bumper!flagged me down and rigged up his towrope which promptly snapped!! we used mine and got him back onto the road, after he tried to tell me how to do it! bloomin townies!hehe :doh:

pulled 1 out yesterday , narrow lane we both puled over to pass each other . thing is i didn't get stuck. pulled him out backwards . not a prob.

i recovered a load of cars that had got stuck skided off the road and ended up in ditch's, even had to assist a bloke in a disco who didnt know how to use the diff lock, he had bought it so he could go out and earn some money out of other people getting stuck at the bottom of the hill he lives on, only to get assistance from me showing him how to drive it properly, only to get ignored and told "your only a kid what do you know, i have been driving for over 40 years" i said "if you dont want my help then goodbye" i went and helped a couple of struggling 2wd's and small lorries up the hill and when i got back down he had moved about a foot, and came over and asked how was it i was able to drive up and down like that yet he was spinning and not moving, all i said was is "i obviously know how to drive properly, and you should not have disrespected me and took some of my FREE advice, you are safer not knowing as you will cause serious injuries to some one else, as you dont have the proper kit for recoverys"

Towed a few cars on Thursday with our 88", then spent most of Fryday morning out with Spyderman, learning a bit more of the "trade" and trying to be helpful.

Ready to start all over again tomorrow morning.

the small roads around buxton were far too dangerous to do last tuesday when i last went out, sheet ice,
there where three of us, two kitted out landies and a kitted out frontera,
i lead and instead of get out our tow ropes other than to aid the decent of the frontera after deciding on road was to bad, we ended up teaching people how to drive :| they wernt going fast enough to get to the top so they ended up stuck in the bottom of the dips :lol:
if anyone knows the goyt valley road stay away when its bad, on on of the steep slopes in a controlled fashion the middle car in the convoy spun around on the ice so we made it safe and got it back straight and two 4x4s ( cant say more than that for legal reasons ) came down not in a controlled way far too fast and smashed into a mates landy who was at the back :| felt sorry for him but in fairness the only damage done was the rusty cross member bent and he had a pannel or two bent lucky he was in the landy

then when we made it back out of the valley the way we came in we were greated by police and fire services that where attending to a chav who had failed to turn the corner and had driven off the road to find a 10 foot drop :shock:
another 30cms of snow predicted in next two days here i better buy a new lylo to sledge on :lol:

I've been carrying the kit around in the boot, but all the roads around me are treated and no fun at all...

I know the theory of how to do it, but I've never had to do it for real - which probably means I'll foul it up.

Err... Any tips? 8-[

same as ktm, i got all stuff needed but all roads clear, ish gutted all my mates saying how they done this and done that,

Not had to tow anyone out, and I keep a 4m strop and a couple of suitably rated shackles in the cubby under the passenger seat. There is more heavy-duty kit in the boot, but that will work for anything up to light greenlane recovery.

Had to go out last night after friends who were arriving couldn't get up the hill next to the distillery...... Took the disco down and found the Navara trying to tow the audi up the hill.... Without any joy what so ever... hooked up the disco to the Audi and off we went...

i posted in general chit chat bout this,it was a proud day for the rangie,dragging an artic up a steep hill near where i live,the driver just laughed in disbelieve,and i was supposed to be at work,never mind :dance:

I had to help the boys in blue move and Artic. It was blocking the exit on a slope at Tesco. They had a go with an X5 but did not move an inch. Me and a mate put both our winches on it to get it past the worst bit, then I pulled it the rest with my 90. The coppers could not believe what they were seeing.

Both me and a mate have pulled many cars over the past week, Is it me or are the towing eyes getting harder to find!

Should have some photos tonight when my mate downloads them.

and to they are too small for the standard sized Shackles, lucky i carry a smaller shackle that fits,

all GM inc. Saab, BMW, Merc, most VAG and many of the japaneese marques have tiny towing eyes

That's quite normal. Having been on duty in a muddy car park field assisting with towing, most people haven't got a clue.

I'm gradually learning where various manufacturers like to hide them.

And watch out for the left-hand threaded screw-in ones for added entertainment.

I also found this problem
I pulled a VW passat yesterday 08 plate. The bloke broke the bumper pulling the cover plate off to get to the tow eye.

The guy had gone down a mild lane thinking it was a road and fallen through ice....

Zafira's don't make good offroaders....

only rescued a couple but must put on my get list a smaller shakle as had to use a pice of rope to attach the car's to our strap

havent done many recoverys this time around as was working within walking distance, glad its not just me who has trouble with towing eyes, have put a tiny shackle in my recovery box, when i come to power it will be one of my first law changes- proper recovery hooks, front and rear, grrrr :) one tip i got from my uncle whose a highways agency traffic officer, (great sorce of ratcet straps, tarps and other stuff that falls of lorrys) is never help a focus, just walk on by, not looking, their just a PITA :) :)

hmm ma highways officer should not be touching a stricken car at ALL it is not in their remit...

Bear in mind folks that towing eyes are ONLY designed for flat tows with NO resistance ie the vehicle must not be stuck....

Fore gawds sake if in doubt dont tow it in this claim society we live in it could be bad news..

after the last post, some 1 inteligent ( not me ) lol write out a legal binding disclaimer to get them to sign saying they take full reponsability if anything goes wrong,
then if you damage there car you got it in writing they understood and signed the disclaimer,

i feel clever today.
maybe get a solicitor to write 1 up

wish for rain at the national and buy a stiff tow rope, not that slightly bunjee type you have ;)

I am sure they dont exist on passatts. no little bit of bumper to remove and a screw in eye or anything. half an hour me and me neighbour spent pushing the car up the hill. grrr. my hands were very cold after that!

I had to recover my self out of someones drive. I reversed my lorry down thier slight hill drive and couldnt get going again. I managed steeper drive ways. I spent 30 minutes digging the wheels out and the rest of the hill. Ice was only about 2inches thick. :roll: a crew cab 4x4 just span all its wheels when it tried to tow me out!!!
