hi folks

quick one here ! whats the pre load on the swivel housing pivot bearings with the seal fitted on a td5 110 front axle,when checked with a spring balance?

2 to 2.6 lbs once you've overcome inertia and without the seal fitted (RRC post 1986 workshop manual).
Just to be different the 1990 suppliment for the above quotes torque instead of force, 5.1 to7.3 Nm (45 to 65 lbs in) and shows a special tool which is effectively a plate that engadges with the swivel pin bolt heads and a 1/4" square drive for it to fit onto a torque wrench.

You need to ckeck the correct manual for that model, there are different types of bearing used depending on model year and the RRC has 2 taper roller bearings which the Defender never had, the Haynes manual for the RRC misses out the later type of bearings for the Railko bush (same type os the Defender) and as such is almost useless.

BTW, when set properly the steerinng will not fully self-centre. that's normal.

thanks for replies ended up doing the job at work,before/during/after the work i was getting paid for :twisted:
so didn't have access to workshop manuals etc so ended up just going by the feel of the swivel housing with the new seals in,seems OK so far !

but did end up changing 1 set of wheel bearings, both c.v joints and both drive flanges (drive flanges seized on to drive shafts) hence the question about the swivel housings

just wondering what your thoughts are regarding the replacement wheel bearings as the original ones are preloaded by a spacer tube which doesn't come with the new non genuine wheel bearings what do you guys do to set these bearings up or am i just being paranoid

BTW the td5 just have one nut holding the wheel bearing in place which doesn't allow for the conventional adjustment method

Never seen a collapsable spacer or any mention of it in a workshopmanual, which car is this on :-.

I understand the TD5 beaings are all one-piece supposedly self adjusting (read non-adjustable) and cost loads because they have the BAS sensor ring built into them too.

its solid spacer tube not a collapsable one and i dont know about genuine bearing kits but the non genuine bearing come with out it
